Air filter w/ Westers tune

Im at the point that I need a new air filter in my 01 2500HD CC 4WD LB 6.0 AT. My truck is all stock right now other than 285s. Im going to get a new PCM(probably Westers) in the very near future. What air filter should I consider going with? Stock? Stock box K&N? open intake K &N?

Is the stock box K&N worth the $50 over a standard air filter $20? Fram's Air Hog is basically the same price. Any other suggestions for air filters? Im interested in as many opinions on this as possible.

I mainly use my truck on the street, but I do make usual trips to the desert pulling a big @$$ trailer, sometimes in dusty conditions. The dust depends on if the wind is blowing or not. Ive heard the K&N is lousy in dusty conditions.

Im trying to plan ahead for the Westers. Is there any other mod I should really consider when going to a Westers? Is there any mod that is a "must do?"

Id like more power and mileage. If the Westers doesnt wake this thing up, Im thinking about trading in for an 8.1.

I've also got a 6.0 in my truck. Your truck is an '01, and it has a mechanical throttle body. Mine has the electronic one. I don't know how much or if any torque control management is in your system, but any computer upgrade would help. I've got a computer en route from Westers'. I talked to Lyndon there and asked the same question you did and also asked about exhaust. He said that an intake and exhaust will not give you the noticeable gains that you'll get from the reprogrammed computer. So that saved me $$ right there. When I get my 'puter I'll give a full report.

One thing about the K&N, if you

buy one you will never have to

buy another filter, just wash them out.

The Wester's tune really brought my 8.1

to life. I highly recommend Wester's.

If you are worried about the filter in high dust conditions, K&N does make filter covers that go over the cone style filters to "pre filter" the larger particles. I believe I have even read threads on these forums where people have used panty hose to cover their filters in high dust conditions.

I agree with a previous post. I love not having to replace an entire filter.

I've gained about 1-1.5 MPG with the K&N Panel on the highway with my Wester's Tune installed. I gained about 2.5-3 MPG with the K&N FIPK. I could tell a difference top-end with the FIPK, along with a little midrange. I can't tell a difference with the panel filter, other than the small mileage increase, if there's a performance gain, I can't tell. I rarely get below 20MPG commuting now with the panel (vs. 18MPG most of the time before, so it's worth it to me)

VOLANT The only system that covers the air filter. also you can get an optional Scoop kit that rams air from the factory tow hook opening into the filter box.

Not mentioned much because they don't advertize alot but form tests I have seen the True Flow filters are superior in both flow and filtering. It is a foam filter.

I've got about a thousand miles on my Wester's computer and there is a considerable difference in the mid range. No so much in the bottom end, I guess that's due to the high first gear in the non-Allison HD transmissions. But at about 3000 rpm, this thing comes alive. And my gas mileage is up 1.5 mpg towing my 5000 lb boat at about 70 for about 250 miles from 9.5 to 11 mpg; and around town from 11.5 to 12.5. Not much, but anything is better than before. I picked up about 1 mpg on the highway from 12.5 to 13.5, but that's doing about 80+ most the way and there are a coulpe of massive grades.

I thought about a K&N unit, but a guy a work has one and he said driving his Sub to Las Vegas drove him nuts with how loud it is. Volant is a covered unit, but will I really gain anymore to make it worth my while?
