switch to bench

I have a question for yall, and some of yall might think I'm crazy for attempting to do this. But I'm an old fashioned guy. :chevy: And I've always thought that a front bench seat was the way to go. I have a 99 (new body style), with two bucket seats with the personal cargo bucket, if you will, in the middle. I'd rather have a split bench seat with the fold-up arm rest.

Does anyone know how to approach something like this? Has anyone ever done a switch? Could the dealership do it? Or is it more of a "pimp my ride" garage kind of thing? Should I be looking at junkyards and places like that?

Thanks in advance

easy swap, everything just unbolts and bolts back in. Just find someone with a bench that will swap you for buckets and a console. I would swap you if I had what you were looking for...

What color interior do you have??

The seats are the same if they are cloth. All you have to do is switch the center console for the middle piece of the bench.

The seat aren't exactly the same.

The bucket seats have little fold out armrest on the seats. The 40/20/40 seats don't have those.

They will interchenage no problem, but the armrests rub the center seat sometimes a little.

It's the black. Or close to it. I think it's the darkest one there is, at least for 99.

I just traded in my 2000 ext. cabLT with the leather buckets for a 2005 crew cab GMC SLE with the bench seat. I like the bench better especially with the fold down armrest. However, I absolutely hate the cloth seats. I am in the process of having them taken off and replaced with the leather. I like being able to slide in and out without the seat grabbing at my clothes. It looks like about a $750-$1,000 mistake.

congrats on the new truck. leather is great. but i use my truck for work a lot, plus I'm just in college. And like the outside, the inside is usually not that nice (clean), plus to me the extra $$ for leather just isn't as big an issue with a truck (I'd probably spend the extra money on tires or something  ). but to each his own. I love leather when you have to wear a suit or something nice, you don't get the fuzz stuff on you when you want to keep your clothes as spotless as possible. I think these days I wear a suit about twice a year for Christmas and Easter haha.

Also, glad you like the bench.

I didn't want leather until I bought this truck. I spend a lot of time muddy, and when I get home, I just wipe them off, and I can hop back in 10 minutes later with nice pants without even thinking of them getting dirty.

Cloth, you have to scrub and scrub, then wait for it to dry....And then beat the dust out of them.

To each his own though. I wish I needed some buckets, so I could help you out.

Good luck in your quest

This is true. Leather is easier to keep clean. Guess I was just thinking along the terms of "get in another car" to go do "cean" stuff. I could always give leather in a truck a shot someday.

I have always see the leather wearing out after just a year or two in people's trucks. Cloth seems to last forever. Do they even make the bench seat in leather? I like my bench for the arm rest, just more comfy than my Dad's arm rest in his truck. Seem to be able to store the same amount of stuff in the bench as the tiny center consoles they use now.

I like the way leather looks and smells when it's new and fresh, but that's about it. Too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter (even though the Lexus's that I drive at work have cooled and heated seats). I've always liked a nice quality cloth seat. I just purchased a set of Legacy Neoprene seat covers that I'm hoping will be pretty nice, just waiting for the big brown truck to arrive.

    • I agree with Tim.  As tech heavy as engines are these days, no way I’d be an early buyer of the new 6.6.  Of course, I bought my ‘26 Denali w/the 6.2 after dumping my Tundra with it’s defective 3.5 liter imploding engine disaster, so I’m a little gun-shy.  That said, my 6.2 has been rock solid.  I don’t drive it like I do my BMW Z4 M40i, but I don’t baby it either.  I got a V8 for a reason.  But I’m averaging 18 around town and 22 highway.  I have seen 24 highway as well when I wasn’t loaded up heavy.  Considering my Tundra with the twin turbo V6 only got 14.5 in town and 17 on the road, I’ll take the 6.2 all day, every day.  If I were you, I’d grab a ‘26 while you can.  Inventories are probably gonna start dropping and I’ll bet the deals will start looking sweeter as well.
    • I am curious if anyone has figured out a way to add an hard button AUX or 360 Camera switch to the center row of switches. I have a 2021 AT4, and want to split the hill decent button and add a 360 camera button so that you don't have to go into the center display and locate the camera functionality, etc...   My father's 2024 Yukon XL AT4 and it has a hard button, see below. I found this thread on the Yukons, but it seems like there may not be a part number for the 2021 sierras. https://www.gm-trucks.com/forums/topic/255339-adding-hard-button-for-camera-on-2021/ Anyone else figured this out. Seems like it would need to be a custom switch!   I am getting ready to install the auto stop/start eliminator, so would be nice to knock them out at once.     Upvote1Downvote0Go to comments
    • Looks like the entire state is burning. 😬
    • Through the years it hasn't been my typical method as I tried to drop oil on an engine that was hot from having been worked, however that was not always practical and had to fire up a unit and let it warm up reasonably well and drop the oil when I had the time to do it but am referring to not only vehicles but a variety of farm equipment and highway tractors etc. However on a vehicle where one is crawling under it and the exhaust is nearby to ones body and if wanting to pull the plug without danger of being hit with boiling hot oil or attempting to remove a HOT oil filter, its sure safer and easier to not have everything smoking hot and can remove the filter right away when under the vehicle and let it all drain. Of course its not the end of the world if a bit of oil stays in the engine that might have eventually found its way out, I like to get out as much as possible but any oil changes that take place in shops would rarely be sitting around for very long at all before the plug is thrown back in and filter slapped on and oil poured in and sent out the door quick like. There would be very little time spent ( assuming they even did it ) in starting the engine with oil to fill the filter, then waiting to verify the level on the stick. A good reason to check ones oil level shortly after a shop changed the oil on a vehicle just to make sure its correct and to look under for any oil around the drain plug or filter.
