Adding posi?

Recommended Posts

Has anyone added a posi unit to their rear end?  It's just about the only thing that my truck didn't come with.  I have 3.73s and I'm getting tired of the right tire spinning around corners when it's wet out.  Snow's coming and it's only going to get worse.

Summit has a Powertrax unit that they say cam be installed in the driveway in a few hours.  Anyone comment?  I know Eaton makes one that some Z28 guys seem to like.

BTW, I picked up my amber DRLs yesterday.  They'll go in this weekend when I change out those dang speakers and wax my baby up.

TIA,

Matt

Cant answer your posi (locking rear diff) question cause i already have one but what kinda speakers are you going with?  My drivers side rear is starting to sound bad.  Spring project?

Which ones are you replacing?

the install time really depends on you mechanical knowlege.  I'd personally take my truck in because I wouldn't want to break anything in the rear diff while installing it.  If you're into offroading you may want to look into an ARB Air Locker. As opposed to just a limited slip.

Nope, my truck won't see much off-road so a locker would be overkill.  Just snow and the other crap that's around here in Michigan.  I have no problem doing it myself as long as I don't have to mess with the ring and pinion.  Even then, it could be a learning experience.

Thanks.

when I lift mine and add 4.56 gears I'll probably go w/ a locker.  Since you aren't big on offroading you would be better off w/ a limited slip locker.  I know a few months back petersons 4wheel and offroad did a big comparison on different types of lockers.  I would check out there site for some install info, I know they've done several articles on them.

there are a variety of locker types available, but they are more intended for serious off-roading,  I'm going to install the eaton type limited slip in my truck soon, they are around $350 new. they are a clutch type posi, similar to the factory type units in the older cars/trucks.  they are a good general use type unit, and they are repairable, many styles are not rebuildable if they wear out.  everyone says to avoid the "gov-lock" type factory units as they are prone to have problems, used ones seem hard to find. check with randy's ring & pinion, they sell the eaton unit for $339
