Broken down on Highway 1 in Baja California, just North of the Bay of LA turn off. Here are the symptoms, could not speed up, so just nudged it until got up to 60 mph, then it was able to curze at 60 mph, after 70 miles tried to stop at side of road, car would not accellerate at all, car died as stopping. I changed the fuel filter, then used the bleed screw and pumped the priming pump until fuel came out. Ran the starter until the battery died. What could be wrong? Please help! This has been relayed to me in Los Barriles, via satellite phone, my friend and his wife are stuck in a very remote place and its raining, would appreciate any help this forum and provide....

I have one possible suggestion: blockage of the intake. I had a piece of splash guard material to flop down into the intake tube, blocking most of the in-flow. Car couldn't go fast and after pullling over, it died at idle and would no longer start. After inspecting everything, I found fender splash guard material blocking the intake. I removed the material and the car was happy.

My friend is driving a 2002 silverado 2500HD pickup with cab height shell. He is in the middle of no-where. I know it sucks, the message about a piece of the fender blocking the air intake sounds good and i wil realy that to him. He needs some things to try, I tried to stop him from attempting the drive with the current big rain in Baja, he made it through the flooded river at Cativina, guess that was pretty hairy, so all help is welcome, I will give him what ever is added in this forum, and I hope it gets him running, they tell me they are pretty cold and miserable...

The splash guard blocking the air intake sounds good, he did ford a river about an hour before the problem, if I get nothing else I will at least give him this when he calls back, good thing for sat phones...I can't afford one, glad he has one...

Oh good Lord.......! You didn't say that! He has a water logged air filter.

He was towed to Guerro Negro, tow truck came from Bay of L.A. junction. Trucker had stopped and told them to check on Chev truck at side of road. Mechanic in G.N. the next morning found the injection pump not working, Gary confirmed that from what he saw looking at pump it did look damaged inside. We have found a pump in Escondido, we located a fellow baja driver about to leave to drive down. He bought the new pump and is driving it down to Guerro and it will arrive tomorrow morning! More info from Gary, he had the water in fuel filter light come on about 600 miles ago, he tried to drain the filter but did not get any water to come out the bottom plastic fitting. I think he needed to open the bleeder valve on top of the filter housing to allow the water to drain. Its possible the water runined the pump, will find out more after they get the new pump on and see if everything fires up, then he will take a day to get here, I have a bunch of questions to ask and will report back to this forum with more info. Makes me want to go out and check my filter and drain a little from it. Diesel in Mexico is not always as clean or water free as one might think. I have heard stories of Gasoline truck drivers adding 50 gallons of water to a load and stopping at a friends farm and selling him some gas, dumping the diluted fuel at a gas station in its tanks! This would explain how we at times find quite a bit of water in the fuel sold here in Southern Baja. Some of the Pemex stations do not have good drainage and with lots of rain the tanks can also be contaminated. I will repost after talking in person to Gary I hope on Tuesday....Hasta...
