'02 or '03 Burb/Yukon XL?

Recommended Posts

So, I am in the same boat as Bowtie beast, except we are lloking at purchasing in the next month.

It seems the consensus is that the '03 got several upgrades vs. the '02. Can anybody elaborate as to what the upgrades are?

I am just recently reintroduced to GM (been in Jeep/Dodge world for a while, oops). Anyway, I am just starting the research on these trucks. Based on what I have read, it seems the electronic TB is not like as well as the cable TB? What are the issues with the electronic vs. the cable, other than not being able to rev your truck up while under the hood?

Also, on the 03+ the center console is different and the seats seem to be a tad bit narrower.

Look on autotrader.com at the different models and many have pictures of the interior so you can see the console. Things like the steering wheel, switches, radio and I think even the climate controls are all shaped/look different.

I am very happy with the electronic TB on my Suburban. As a matter of fact, I can't tell the difference when driving my Suburban vs. my 2000 Silverado.

There may be more TM, but a Westers will solve that. My Suburban seems slower than my Silverado, but it is heavier and my truck has a couple of small mods.

The Drivers INformation Center is handy and sometimes a bit too much information, but it is nice.

We love our Suburban and wish we would have bought on a long time ago now.

Good Luck with your decision!! :withstupid:

I like the 03-05's better the Dual zone climate control, DIC, Power heated autodimming turnsignal mirrors, steering wheel controls, 6 disk bose w/XM, and upgraded interior make it so much more comfortable to drive. I almost bought a 02 Suburban but I ended up with a new 04 crew instead.

The only negative I can think of is the '03s lost the cabin air filter.  Of course, that might be a positive for some.  :chevy:

That's not the only thing GM took out of their NBS FS trucks/SUVs for '03...and the difference in content from '03 to '04 is even worse. :seeya:

I know 'cuz I own(ed) both an '03 and an '04...

I guess I'm one of the few that like the '02 better than the '03. I've had both, and even though the '03 had a few more features, I hardly ever utilized them. Seems like the '02 is built better, and GM started cutting corners in '03 (no cabin air filter, no underhood light, no chrome mirror covers, etc).

I drive an '02 now and am much more pleased overall.

Personally I like the interior and the front end stying of the '02 better than the new ones....

Could you elaborate a little more?

The "little" stuff...like no more secondary sun visors, passenger door keylock, battery indicator (the green-eye thingy window on the battery), door panel courtesy lights on the rear doors, no more idiot LEDs on the headlight switch (lets you know if headlights are in auto-on mode)...didn't GM also get rid of the center console lock after '02...and the work gloves that came with the jack? And of course stuff already mentioned like glovebox lock, glovebox light, hood light, kickpanel lights, cabin air filter, liftgate keylock...

I know '05 wasn't mentioned but heck, that didn't stop GM from doing some more cost-cutting--no more driver 1/2 selection via key fob (have to use 1/2 buttons on the door panel), instant fuel economy, personal/business trip meter indicators (only show up as A/B)...

Also, I remember back in the day when I bought my '99 Tahoe, GM sent me a nice Tahoe-badged auto travel kit--came with a small travel bag, mag light, travel mug, etc. Guess they definitely got cheap, cuz I got nothing when I bought my '03 YXL and '04 DXL...both of which cost at least/almost twice as much (at that time) as my '99 Tahoe.
