oil filters

I need to know the difference in oil filters. I have a 2000 gmc pickup that uses a pf 59. I also have a 2002 suburban that uses a pf59. Now my 2005 pickup uses a pf46. After looking at them side by side I can only see that one is shorter than the other. Why can't I use the pf59 on all three? What is the real advange to the pf46? If there is one.

I know of people that use the PF 59 instead of the PF 46, however, I heard that the smaller filter somehow prevented engine clatter at startup.

The PF59 is a better filter as it has more filter area. However, it has been discontinued by AC Delco & replaced with the PF46.

 

Of course, the aftermarket suppliers might still have a similar size to the PF59.

 

Some newer trucks (trailblazer) can't take the PF59 due to clearance issues.

I do not mean to bash the AC filter because it is not a bad filter, however it is far from the best and IS NOT the same filter that came on your truck from the factory. In years past, buying an AC filter meant you were installing the same filter that came on the truck from the factory. This is not true any more. AC contracts their filters out to other mfgs, not necessarily a bad thing, but they are not the best.

 

I am partial to WIX filters and if you ever see one cut open you will understand why. Also, their filter for your truck is still long like the PF 59. I use a CARQUEST Premium filter, part # 85522, which is mfgd by Wix for CQ.
