Interesting...........I have an '04 Envoy XUV with basically the same problem. It actually hasn't done it to me in awhile. But it has happened a number of times. I have no freackin clue why????????????? My performance shop said he had this problem with a car once. When they took it to the dealer, they discovered the tank or something in the assembly wasn't hooked up correctly. I have yet to take mine in as it has been a little while.........

I've heard somewhere (Edmunds' forums, maybe) that somebody had something in the fuel filler neck replaced for this issue.

I never had anything replaced, but I know the 2003 Trailblazer I had did this too, but only for certain pumps / gas stations. My 2004 Silverado just had it happen for the first time yesterday too. As far as I know it's an issue between the angle of the filler neck and the sensitivity of the pump cutoff mechanism. (For the pumps that did this on mine, I not only had to hold it manually, I had to keep a very low flow going, so it seemed to take forever to fill up.)

i had this once with my gf's envoy. only at the one station though, and never since.

my silverado had this problem. there was some sort of valve (forget the name - i think it was to prevent backflow) that went bad where the filler tube conected to the tank. had it replaced under warranty and its been fine ever since.

yo i'm so happy for this site. you guys rule. i was starting to think it was me. i,m going to have to have it checked out before the warranty runs out. its a real pain in my ass.

This bulletin is being revised to provide new part number for 2002-2003 vehicles. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 04-06-04-003 (Section 06 -- Engine/Propulsion System).

This bulletin provides information on two different conditions.

Condition 1

Some customers may comment that their vehicle is difficult to fill with fuel or when filling, the pump continuously shuts off before the tank is full.

Cause

This condition may be caused by the variability (fuel flow rates, type of fuel fill nozzle, fuel properties) at the filling stations. There is a potential to develop an increase in back pressures internal to the fuel fill neck. This back pressure trips the fuel nozzle prior to filling the tank, or results in a hard to fill condition.

Condition 2

Some customers may comment that when filling the fuel tank, a small amount of fuel may spit back/out.

Cause

This condition may be caused by the equalization of pressure between the fuel tank and the fuel fill neck that does not react quickly to the variance in the pressure when the fueling station fuel nozzle trips off.

Correction

Replace the fuel tank filler upper pipe assembly with P/N 88983256 or P/N 15131043, and lower hose assembly with P/N 15131046. The new upper pipe has been redesigned to provide smoother flow conditions within the section and the lower hose has been redesigned to include a checking feature. Use the procedure listed below.

Remove the fuel fill cap.

Remove the fuel fill pipe housing.

Remove the fuel fill pipe bracket nut (2).

Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in the General Information sub-section of the Service Manual (SI Document ID #744862).

Remove the fuel fill pipe ground strap bolt.

Cut off the ground strap ring terminal and tie strap.

Loosen the fuel hose clamp (8).

Remove the fuel fill upper pipe (7) from the vehicle.

Install the new fuel fill upper pipe into the vehicle. Use P/N 88983256 for 2002-2003 model year vehicles or P/N 15131043 for 2004 model year vehicles.

Tighten the fuel hose clamp.

Tighten

Tighten the clamp to 2.5 N·m (22 lb in).

Wrap the excess length of ground strap around the fuel hose as necessary.

Install the fuel fill pipe ground strap bolt in its original location.

Loosen the fuel hose clamps (1,3).

Remove the lower fuel hose (2) from the vehicle.

Install the new lower fuel hose into the vehicle.

Tighten the lower fuel hose clamps.

Tighten

Tighten the clamps to 2.5 N·m (22 lb in).

Lower the vehicle.

Install the fuel fill pipe bracket nut.

Tighten

Tighten the nut to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

Install the fuel fill pipe housing.

Install the fuel fill cap.

Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions, and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, DO NOT assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. Thanks GM-Tech. That pretty much sums up both what I'd read elsewhere (in much better detail coming from you though, lol) and the experience I had with my '03. If I still had it I'd be taking it into the shop now and getting it updated based on that writeup. I remember that it was a real PITA whenever I stopped at a station and ran into that problem. (And the occasional fuel burp onto the side of the TB right after I'd washed it really got me :seeya:)

I guess us "Out of Warranty" guys are SOL.

I've had this happen routinely with both the '03 Rendezvous and the '02 Envoy. It seems that I have to find the exact "sweet spot" to be able to fill wide open at the one pump in town that has the "autofill" catch.

Since I last posted I've actually had this happen twice with my '04 Silverado. It's just as annoying now as I remember it being when it happened with the Trailblazer though. There's got to be something about the newer pump handles that are being installed around the country, because this wasn't happening with my truck until the local gas station replaced the handles with some new ones sometime in the last week or so.

Thanks for the TSB info.. I took it to my dealer last week and they've ordered the new fuel filler.. It's getting replaced next week.

BTW, my dealer's service manager had a fit because he hates when customers come in with this info.. luckily my service writer is a buddy of mine and he took care of it.

That's sad. This has been discussed just recently in another forum. I still can't see why a service manager DOESN'T want the customers to bring him TSBs that list the symptoms they are experiencing with their vehicles. If the SM is doing their job properly this should save them time (they don't have to search all the TSBs in the system themselves to see if any address the issue), and if they're like some I know who don't look anyway, it saves both time and money letting the mechanics experiment with parts until they solve the problems..

I've been lucky with my current dealership's service department because the SM doesn't mind at all. :D
