Someone is testing my patience

Need some more help guys. The son's S-10 quit running tonight. He said it was running fine then the battery/alt light came on and it quit. Has spark, has fuel pressure but without a guage can't tell how much. Fuel pump comes on and stops so it is reaching required pressure. Keep in mind this is the same truck I just changed the intake gaskets on. Ran fine for 1 1/2 days after the gasket change. Just towed it home 7 miles behind the trusty Sierra. Any suggestions?

Does that year have the oil pressure/fuel pump sensor on the engine? If it has gas and spark it should run. Is it TBI or spider on the fuel delivery?

Did any other lights come on? Usually when the batt lt comes on, that means that it isn't charging...maybe a battery or alternator problem...possibly a loose connection?

Sorry guys. It's a 4.3 with multiport injection (spider). Not sure if it has oil pressure cut off. Have checked all connections that are obvious and all seem ok. Will play with it today. I'll keep you posted.

Battery cable corroded, and cutting in/out mabye?

The one on my Blazer was doing the same kind of crap. Driving down the road just fine, then the guages started acting possessed and the truck would sputter and die.

Pull off to the side, and it would fire right back up, only to die again 10 minutes later.

The battery cable (positive one) looked brand new...Yet the inside just poured out in a white powdery pile when I cut into it.

Just a thought anyway. :happysad:

If your truck is like my 99 suburban, the pump is not shut off when pressure builds. It runs on a timer to pressurize the system, then runs continuously when the engine fires. You could still have a faulty pump or regulator. Or a clogged filter.

After dicking with it off and on all day, the thing will fire on starting fluid. Seems to be getting no fuel. Changed the fuel filter, still no go. I'm thinking it's the fuel pump again. That's right again. changed it in the middle of Sept. Always has been kinda loud. Now when it runs it sounds terrible, like it's beating itself to death. When I turn the key on the pump runs til timed out, several seconds. When I release the fuel pressure at the schrader valve there is very little pressure, book says should be around 50 lbs. Now trying to find someone who has a guage I can borrow to save me $50 on a tool I'll use once. Man I'm sick of this truck. :happysad:

For what it's worth:

I had a 1995 GMC Sonoma (inherited from my grandfather). One day it just wouldn't start. Had fuel pressure, great battery voltage, no electrical issues. Explained everything to the local shop, they confirmed what I had checked and found it to be the spider assembly. Many hundreds of dollars later (stupid expensive part), the truck ran again without issue.

Then the fuel pump and or relay in the tank died ... but that's another story.

I had a 1993 S-10 2.8 TBI and when the fuel injector failed, it acted just like what you are saying. It would crank all day, fuel pump would prime, would start temporarily on starter fluid but would not stay running. I had the inector replaced and never had a bit of trouble again. Keep us posted, good luck!

I had to chuckle when I read the "spider assembly" part! Reminded me of the Napa commercial with Michael Waltrip and Dale Jr. where Dale tells him it should be called an insect assembly since it only has six legs...

Sounds like the fuel pump is out again. Does your son keep it pretty much empty all the time, only adding a couple gallons when it's clear on "E"? That will kill a fuel pump prematurely since they are cooled by the fuel.

It was the fuel pump. And yes when the light come on, "I'd better get some gas!". Knuckle head. Dad's thru working on his truck too. Had the preventative maintanance talk last night. Told him if he doesn't do his part, I'm not doing any part. Been giving him aride to work all week too, never even offers gas money. Thank God I can still claim him on the income tax. :wtf:
