Burning smell from diff.

Recommended Posts

My buddy has a 2002 2500 Durmax stick, with about 40,000 miles now, I think.

Everytime he puts it in 4hi, there is a burning smell, kinda like burning tranny fluid so it smells like. The first time it happend we were sitting in a parking lot, at church, and he was going to go over one of those cement parking blocks. Well he put it, 4hi and started to ease up over it, and it started to smell, and you could actually see some smoke.

Well now ever since then if he just puts it in 4hi it smells like that, and he hasn't even attemted to roll forward with it engaged.

Is his front diff dead. It dosn't make any sounds at all, but you can tell that it engages by the feel.

He bought it used, with about 30,000 miles on it. And did have to use the 4x4 once out in the mud at a job site, but didn't notice the smell then. But since that day at church it smells like that.

Any help would be appreciated.

Sure it is not the clutch you are smelling? Dmaxs can be hard on clutches and can be smoked easily if you slip them under high torque (like trying to jump a curb)

Yeah, I do agree with snoman, there is nothing in the T-case that would burn(Grenade maybe). It might be the wiring to the T-case solenoid or the solenoid itself that might be defective and only burns when engaged into 4WD. That might be a possibility. :)

This is possible but if the smoke is actually visible, the wireing would have toasted and lost its insulation by now. A clutch can give off a load of smoke and quickly too.

I understand that but the solenoid itself may smoke for awhile. It was just an idea, because sometimes it is never the obvious thing.

This is true but generally is a solenoid gets to the point is smokes at also short circuits and blows a fuse or stops functioning. Since these seem to be reoccuring it tends to rule that out. He would not be the first guy (or the last) to smoke a clutch in a Dmax.

I think we are going off in another direction, so let me explain. I agree with you about the clutch, I just threw in the solenoid idea as a possibility but now that I re-read his post and he says it smells like tranny fluid burning maybe he has a transfer case leak that only manifests itself when in 4WD.That's another stretch but since you and I have been around trucks for a long time, we both know that sometimes you think the problem is obvious but it turns out to be something you never thought of so I am trying to cover anything I can think of that may cause the problem he is having. Another thing he might try is doing the same thing in 4 Lo and see what happens. That will put a lot less stress on the clutch. You never know.

I agree, the 4lo idea is a sound idea to try clutch wise. The torque kinda sneaks up on you with a Dmax and cluth as the boost starts to build and you can toast it easy if you are not carefull. It "clutches" a bit different than a gas motor from a stand still under load as torque is very limited until boost and RPM builds up a bit when coming off idle.
