neglected tranny

i have a 93 silverado with 140,000 miles dosn't appear that the trans has ever been serviced. i was told not to change the filter at this point because it could cause more trouble then it is worth, just to drain out as much fluid as possible and put in anti slip with new fluid. i was just looking for another opinion

I dont know about that but I just changed the fluid in my 93 sonoma. To my knowledge it has never been serviced. (The fluid was very dark) But then again my truck only has 69000 miles on it

There are some that say changing the fluid if it's never been serviced regularly will impart some sort of failure due to the new fluid loosening up any varnish or deposits.

 

I have never seen that to be the case and I sure don't see what problems could be caused by changing the filter.
