Trans Case Dry

Stupid question, I am just to lazy to get under the thing and check. I have a very slow leak from one of my front shafts. 2003 with 31000 miles, yes I know not acceptable. It is going to take me a week to get to the dealer, so if it F's anything up GM will have to bite it on that one. I was just wondering what the symptoms of a try T case would be. My Clunk is comming back with a vengence and i have greased the slip yoke splines.

I would think it would get louder, hotter, and eventually fail and require replacement. I wouldn't take the chance. I had a very slow drip from the rear output shaft seal. It was fast enough to coat the transfer case but not enough to drip on the driveway. When I replaced the seal a week later I was already a qt low!

It isn't really that hard to change/fill. I can do it without jacking up the truck. Do youself a favor and get one of those push pumps that screw onto a clean plastic jug. Fill with Autotrak II, hold the tube to the fill hole and pump until it overflows. While you are down there, inspect the transfer case for pinhole leaks. I have seen some with tiny holes that are leaking primarily due to poor quality castings.

If one of the front axle shafts are leaking, it is not the transfer case, but the front differential. And if any of these are left to get dry, it may not be covered under warranty because checking the fluids is part of regular maintenance. Neglect of regular maintenance can void a warranty.

Doh! Didn't even catch that "one of the front axle shafts" part. Oh well. The same rule applies; letting any part that is immersed in oil go dry cannot be a good thing.

Found less then half a cup of the fluid in my Transfer Case when I went to change the fluid a few weeks ago, Very angry. Can't figure out where any of it would be leaking from, no spots on driveway. It still had the red ATF and not the blue stuff that I put in but I am getting a clunk when I take off from a stop and I also get some "slipping" when taking off from a stop so I am thinking I am screwed. The truck doesn't even have 100,000 miles on it yet. How much am I looking at for a new Transfer Case?
