Thinking of getting a 2500HD

I am kicking around the idea of trading in my 05 1500HD on a new 2500HD CC SB, the thing is that the 2500HD with the 6.0 is rated 100 lbs. less than my 1500HD for fifth wheel towing. I am thinking about the 8.1 but is anyone running the 8.1 without the Allison? My campers GVWR is 8500 lbs and the 6.0 pulls is ok but the 8.1 would pull it a lot better.

FYI, I bought it!

New post.

The 8.1 only comes with the allison in the trucks unless you get the manual tranny. the 8.1 in the Avalance and Suburban only comes mated to the 4L85E.

Thats what I thought buy why can I "build" a 2500HD on Chevy.com with an 8.1 and I am not forced to add the Allison?

Why don't you want the Allison? I think one of the reasons they require it is that the Allison can handle more torque than the 4 speed.

We noted that for 05 the Duramax torque listed for the manual was less than with the automatic. Further investigation showed that the manual transmission had a lower torque rating so they somehow limited the output for it.

I have a camper that weighs about what your's

does but it is a travel trailer not a fifth wheel. Just my

opinion but if you get the 8.1 you will want the Allison. It

makes towing easy.

Sorry if I gave the wrong impression about the Allison, I guess I was confused on why the Chevy let me build one on their site without it.

Well looks like I'll start looking for a 2500HD with the 8.1. This seems like the best time to trade up, $4500 in rebates for a 2500HD crew cab (excludes Duramax 6600 Turbodiesel) and I have 21,000 miles on my truck and for the first time I owe less on a vehicle than what its worth for trade-in according to KBB.com and edmunds.com.

I thought that selecting an 8.1 would automatically give you the Allison. KBB does.

Sounds like a good move to me. I have the feeling that your are at about the limit of your tow capability with that 6L. Of course it is the bigger engine and running gear that give you more pulling power.

I like the Duramax. Don't know if it was really worth it, especially with the price of diesel being more than premium gas. I just wanted a diesel. Most all my pulling is in the Rocky mountains regularly going over 12000 foot passes.

Just yesterday I had to stop at a GM Dealer and take a close look at one they had in their lot. A modified 4500:

Well, I just left the dealership and looks like I am getting a new truck. They gave me what I wanted for my 1500HD and they are trying to dealer trade a Black 2500HD CC SB 8.1 Allision. It that falls through they found the same truck in the sport red and one in the dark gray but they will have to dealer trade those also. Wish me luck!

Good luck, dude.

Just thought you might want to know that the dark gray metallic is discontinued for 2006. So if you wanted a truck in a color that there won't be a zillion of, the dark gray one would be a good choice.

Black is always good, though, so if plan-a comes together, cool.
