6 disc changer problems

gmbellew

Question

I have a 2004 z71 suburban with the bose 6 disc changer in the dash. The changer has recently stopped operating properly, and will no longer play. The little disc above the numbers of cd's in the changer flashes, and the only thing I can get the cd player to say is "initializing" across the display. I tried disconnecting the power (pulled the fuse for several hours). after I did that, it didn’t recognize the changer was full. I just left it alone, and every time I start the truck up (after it sits for a while), I can hear it shuffling things around, and trying to figure things out. It will not eject any cd’s when I push the eject button. I called the chevy dealer to see if there is any way to reset it, and the lady said that they don’t even try to fix things like this, they just replace it. I am under warranty, so this is not a huge deal, but I won’t have an opportunity to get it in for a couple of weeks. I was wondering if there is anything I could do (some certain buttons to push, or something) besides cut the power (which I already did) to help the changer figure things out.

Thanks,

Glen.

I had something similar happen to the 6 disc changer in my wife's 2004 Malibu. In addition to the flashing disc image her DIC (part of the stereo / changer in these cars, ironically enough) gave her an error message and code. When we looked it up in the owner's manual all we found was that this error required us to have a qualified GM service center diagnose the problem. The dealership did exactly as yours has said they will- they ordered a replacement, leaving the defective one in the car until the replacement was ready. Then they called us in and swapped them. When we asked about getting our CDs back we were told that the dealership doesn't (can't!) open up the unit to remove them or it voids the warranty (they won't get paid). Instead they shipped ours off to a "repair center" with a note attached stating that our CDs were still in it and asking for the repair center to mail them to the dealership. About a week or so later the dealership called us to pick up my wife's CDs.
