problems starting -

I have a 04 1500 Silverado that has some trouble starting. Most of the time is starts, but occasionally it will not. The starter motor turns but the engine doesn't catch, other times nothing happens when you turn the key. Chevy service has replaced the throttle position sensor and the ignition switch.

 

Still have the problem so it going back for the third time. I like it but it's aggrevating havinga truck you can't depend on (hummm)

 

Any help is ideas will be appreciated!!

Does the SECURITY LIGHT flash when the engine fails to start?

It may be a problem with the VATS (Vehicle Anti-Theft System).....just a guess

does it do it all the time or only when its warm?

 

If it does it when its warm, same thing happened to me, and it turned out to be a bad fuel pressure regulator

I don't know where you are from, but if I'm correct, here in Texas if you have to take your new vehicle in for service for the same problem more than three times, I think you can have your vehicle replaced under a lemon law. If you're tired of messing with it, that could be an option as well.

When you are saying "doesn't catch". Does the starter turn and the engine not turn over at all? That sounds like a bad starter sylenoid. If that sylenoid does not engage the starter motor to the fly wheel then that could be the problem you are describing. As far as lemon laws go, you are a long way off. They will replace motors and trannys up to three times before they award you a replacement or refund. I'm not sure but I think that law is federally mandated. If the problem is deemed absolutely non-fixable then GM may buy it back, but as long as the warranty is there they will use it until it expires.

The problem seems to be random; it mostly happens when warm, but has happened when cold. The starter has engaged, so that the engine spins but never starts. Turning the key has also produced no response.

 

Replacing the ignition switch was supposed to fix this because the vechicle security system was not working.

 

I'm wondering if one electrical part failed and has caused problems with other components; fixing that could be like chasing a bunch of chickens.

 

Not ready for the lemon laws yet, although I will be looking into them.

 

If you have other thoughts, let me hear them!

I hope your dealer is working hard at helping you with this problem. A truck that is new and that you are making payments on even though it won't start is not a good combo.

 

I'd suggest that maybe the dealer needs to get the area rep involved in this...

The dealership has been very helpful; no complaints except that it's not competely fixed. I have some patience since this seems to be an electrical problem, although I am going to have them check the fuel pressure regulator.

 

My truck runs and starts most of the time; it's just aggrevating.

If you have some events where the engine cranks (but doesn't fire), and other events where the engine doesn't even crank, then I'd say the replacement ignition switch (if they really replaced it) is still the problem.

 

Either that or you have 2 problems, which is why it's risky to take your truck in to the dealer for warranty work. Their diagnosis of problem 1 can sometimes cause problems 2, 3, 4, etc.

 

Did you ask to see the old ignition switch? That sometimes keeps them honest.

Just to follow-up in case soneone else has this type of problem; the dealership replaced the ignition switch (twice during this visit) and a relay in the engine bay under the fuse box. They got the idea to replace the relay when they called the GM tech center(?).

 

Anyway, they say it's fixed, and I hope it is.
