1999 Rusting in doors and 1/4's

My 1999 Silverado seems to be rusting more than should be normal. I had to replace the gas door at 60,000 mi as it was pretty much gone (though there was no other rust anywhere). Then at about 70K the door skins peeled all the paint off at the bottom fold on the inside. I tried to fix it but it's back now worse at 85K. This weekend I was washing the car by hand (first time by hand in about a year) and the sponge was coming up with paint chips from the undersides of the 1/4 panels (front and back). I looked and the paint was totally gone to bare metal all around the bolts and other edges.

 

I have never done anything with these parts and the carfax on the truck (bought it returned lease) said no issues. Does GM warrentee paint from 1999 (built date was 11/98). I've just about had it with this truck. I've had every one of the issues ppl complain about (4WD button, ABS module, power window failure, leaky rear window, and the leather is already all cracked). The one lesson I've learned is to never buy a vehicle in the first model year after a redeisgn.

Where do you live and what kinda mileage does your truck have?

I notice you said something about a snowmobile in another post, High road salt useage?

I have yet to see one of the NBS trucks rust, but around here trucks that are are 20 years plus usually don't have rust unless they are never washed and are caked in mud underneath. Probably a different story up north.

I had the rust situation you describe with my 95 Suburban 4X4. Kept going with oiling the affected doors, until it starting rusting through.

 

Had the body shop repair all four doors and the rear tailgate. Cost about $2,500.00 Cdn.

 

Salt, snow, sand and mud do their work. Rust protection applied inside the door to run down in that area can help considerably. If I purchased a new truck, I'd definitely do a rust protection plan in this area.

Thats why I asked because I haven't either. It just seems the paint is peeling right off in places. seems like the e-coat may have had an electrical contact issue that day or something. It certainly seems like a manufactuing defect to me. I'm at 90k mi right now so I know a lot of other manufacturers offer a 10 year 100k mi paint/rust warrantee.

Mine has rust holes in the rocker panels, and it's never been up north.

It used to be some kid's farm truck and he drove it through manure a lot though. I've heard poo is corrosive so that's probably what did it.

I just had my truck in it's a 1999 Silverado extended cab 2500 and the rocker panels under the cab were rusting from the inside out (which is key to have it warrantied) they cut out 80% of the driver side rocker panel and replaced, the entire rear sheet metal panel behind the driver door and replaced the pillar on the passanger side behind the 3rd door. Also 90% of the rocker on the passanger side of the truck, all under warranty. When I took it in the truck had 98,000 miles on it and when they fixed it 101,000 miles on it. I can't complain, I would have never guessed they would have stood behind the warrranty. The body shop manager said that it was very helpful that my truck was so well taken care of. Warranty is up to 100,000 miles or 10 year and the rust must be coming from the inside out and they should cover it.

I just had the inside of my passenger side door on my 2001 sandblasted and painted, the paint was bubbling where the rubber strip is at the point the outside skin and inside part of the door meets.

I have a large portion of the paint bubbling on the lower portion/inside of all four doors on the 01 Tahoe. I took it in a couple of weeks ago and asked the service manager to take a look (He is the Dealership Owner's son). He told me he would call and get back with me. A week later I was in the shop and he told me that GM would pay half now if I would pay half or if it got worse....They would pay for it? Doesn't make since to me. Anyone heard of something like this?
