Oil change interval???

Recommended Posts

The dealer and the owners manual tell me to change my oil whenever the dashboard light tells me to but that is often only every 10,000 Km or more. Is going by this going to void my waranty or seriously damage my truck? It's a 3 year lease and will be returned by 80,000 but I want to make sure I'm not going to get dinged with some out of waranty repairs. Do I follow the instructions or go with a lower Km interval?

Since it's a lease and if you don't plan on keeping it then I would just go by what the manual states. There is a heavy use and light use recomendation so you'll have to decide what use you do. If your going to keep it then I'd do it every 3000 regardless of the DIC.

1 Kilometer= 0.621miles

1 mile =1.609km

I not sure if my math is correct but 10,000km is well over 6,0000miles. I would not let any vehicle I own pass the 3,000mile (4800-5000km) mark without a oil and filter change.

Now I have a question: does the change oil indicator work with the odometer or does it "sense" the condition of the oil?

The indicator calculates conditions and lights up when it figures it's time. As far as voiding the warranty, the warranty should indicate that service requirements per the manufactures recommendations (manual) must be followed. Check the paperwork.

Average recommendations

3-4K on dino

5-7K on 100%syn

over 60% city driving use the lesser number

over 75% highway use the higher

I myself use 100%syn change at 5K

There's a post somewhere here about how GM's oil life monitor worked.

Mobil1 5W-30 synthetic oil and a fresh AC-Delco PF59 oil filter every 3,000 miles here. :chevy:

Mobil 1 Filter and oil every 5K.

The oil life monitor tracks many variables including start/stop cycles, warm up time, driving habits to "estimate" the life of the oil based upon your driving habits. It does not test the oil.

According to oil analysis I have done at every change, 6K is about the limit for me as insulubles start to rise after that. Having said that, my oil light has NEVER gone on prior to my oil change unless I forgot to reset it.

Bottom line...take HDChuck01's advice. If you are getting rid of it after the lease, follow the oil life monitor. If you want to keep it a long time, change it sooner. The CANNOT void your warranty if you wait until the oil life monitor says to change it.
