95 5.7 throwing belt??

Recommended Posts

I just put a new belt on my truck last week. The other day I turned the a/c on as soon as i got in the truck and it threw the belt off of the a/c compressor. I put it back on and it was all good for about another week. Yesterday on my way home (a/c on) it threw the belt again. I put a new one on and its been fine with the a/c off. I'm now scared to run the a/c :fume:

Question: Would it fix the problem if i recharged the system with the stuff that has the oil in it? I assume that is my problem... ??

I just bought the truck a few months ago so i don't know much about prior maintenence or repairs (bought it from a dealer friend who got it at an auction).

Thanks in advance for any input.

If the compressor is seizing up, causing the belt to come off, adding oil isn't going to help. Too much oil can be a problem too, so just adding some arbitrary amount isn't necessarily going to help.

Thanks for your input!

Well i added a can of oil to the system and it seemed to work. I drove it all day yesterday in 90* heat with the a/c blaring...

One thing my buddy said could also be causing this is the idler pulley next to the compressor. I'm just going to get a new one for peace of mind seeing as how the truck has 150k miles and it probably still has the original on it.

That's what my '92 was doing. Shucking the belt at random times. It was the idler pulley.
