A thought just crossed my mind as I was sitting here, who beside myself has a stepside and why did you choose it? I choose stepsides because that I like the older pick-ups 40s 50s and they were mostly stepsides.

I was wondering the same stepside...why?? I know, again, its a looks thing and they do look good but whats the thinking?  Seems like you loose bed space to me.......

I've got one of the new sportside trucks.  Because I really don't use the bed for hauling anything of real size, and I liked the looks of it better.  Don't see too many of them around here either.  I've seen maybe 5 at best.  I also had to wait for 2 months to order the truck because I missed the order deadline for 2000 by a week, and had enough time to sve more money to order some extra stuf I wanted.  Glad I waited.  I can't stop staring at my truck when I'm outside.

Kania2k1 - you are right, not too many around here at all which I find kind of odd because there seems to be no end to the number of fleetsides.....maybe they are all worker bees needing the bed space not LOOKER bees like you!  I keep searching for you when I'm out and about but havent seen you yet.  Will walk up to you one day and scare the h$ll out of you!

Newbie,

The only space you loose in the stepsides is that portion over the wheel wells. In a shot bed configuration that really isn't much. I guess the standard for full size trucks is can you lay a sheet of plywood down in the bed, and the answer is yes.

Well again, my lack of knowledge is outstanding! I guess it just look slike you lose more room.  The looks are good though.  I have to drive mine in the corporate environment and I get raised eyebrows as it is! If I showed up in a sportside I dont know what would happen...!

sportsides

Not all sportsides can carry a piece of plywood lying down flat.  If you add a plastic drop in bedliner it will take away a bit of room and in some you will have to lay the plywood on its side because it wont lay flat.

SO yes you do lose a little bit of room with a sportside.

I have a fenderside (as GMC called them in 1972).  I like the stepsides that have one-walled bedsides (pre-1988), always have.  I especially love the longbeds; they're relatively rare.  So when I saw the 1972 GMC C2500 longstep with a good list of options I bought it. :)

But I don't see the point inthe new sportsides.  The old stepsides were a cheaper, more cheaply made option for those who didn't want to afford a fleetside (GMC=wideside).  Now it costs more to have less bed space.  ?!?

gmcblu,

I like that 72 you have!  That's cool!  My wife learned to drive a standard on one similar to that but a "3 on the tree" model and later 70's.  By the way, must be a "requirement" to own a pickup and live on your block.  LOL, the one picture you have shows about 2 trucks in front of every home.  Now that's my kind of neighborhood!

Regards,

BIG BLUE
