I just bought a 2001 tahoe 5.3 vortec . about 15 seconds after shutting off the motor I hear a loud pong noise coming from the vehicle . it sounds kind of like hitting the side of a metal drum filled with water . any idea what this is and should I be worried. thanks

It is your muffler. I had my dealer replace mine, from the head pipes to the tailpipe, the new muffler sounded like someone throwing rocks at a tin drum as it cooled down. That seemed to last about 5000 miles then it stopped.

The next time I brought my truck in for service, my service advisor showed me a technical service bulletin (TSB) stating that there is a problem with the mufflers, but there is not a fix at this time - DO NOT REPLACE THE EXHUAST SYSTEM!

I changed my muffler to a FloPro 2503 and love the low burble and no sound at cruise.

Good luck!
