transfer case oil

I want to add oil to my trensfer case and all my service manual tells me that I should use GM automatic transfer case fluid which isnt readly available where I live (Bahamas).

 

Is there a commonly available type of oil that I can use instead of the Gm product?

 

Also, I will have to get a seal replaced (the one that seals where the front drive sahft enters the transfer case and I wll also need to change U-joints on both the front and rear drive shafts.

 

Are these jobs that you guys would recommend that i take on myself? I have all the tools and I'm pretty good at following instructions.

AutoTrak II only in the transfer case. GM only product.

 

Regarding the seal, the rear output shaft seal is CAKE to replace but not so sure about the front output shaft. U-Joints are very simple with a press and a little tougher if you don't have a press. I would not hesitate to attempt any of those but then again, my wife thinks I'm crazy!

The "red stuff" that was in your transfer case was not transmission fluid,It was the original "Auto-Trak" fluid,The blue fluid (Auto-Trak II) is the replacement for the red,DO NOT use anything but the GM Auto-Trak II fluid, The reason GM made it blue in color was so people would not confuse it with Dexron transmission fluid.

Ryan, I am really not that familiar with Auto-Trac II fluid. But basically, to answer your question, for any given application, there is a specifcation(classification) for the recogmended fluid used. If we were taking about a automatic transmission, for Dexron III, there are several brand names that would meet this specification. So you would not have to go to your dealer for auto transmission fluid. But, for the Auto-trac transfer case, there is no equivalent fluid available at this time. But, considering, you only need 2-3 quarts at ~$6.00 a quart, it's not really that bad. Maybe someone else can better explain this for you, but basically, the Mobil 1 would not meet the specification for the transfer case. MMM
