Evaporator access, 97 Tahoe

I am trying to track down a small a/c leak but am not sure how to access the evaporator. I would also like to clean the coil out due to reduced air flow through the vents (fan speed is ok). It's 1997 Tahoe Sport 2 dr.

 

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

You might be able to gain some access to the evap if you pull the blower motor out. Don't know for sure because I never tried it. We either stick the sniffer in the center a/c vent, with the blower on the lowest speed. Usually though, we use fluorescent dye and you can often find this coming out the drain after a while.

The evaporator was readily exposed by removing the blower motor. I had about 1/4" of mud caked on the face along with leaves and other debris. I vacuumed as much as I could off, then took spray degreaser and a garden hose and sprayed it off. What a difference, air flow is significantly increased and cooling is phenomenal . I would highly recommend to anyone living in a dusty area or with reduced vent flows. Also, it removed all the musty smell from the system.

My leak turned out to be a leaky valve on the compressor.
