I have posted before about not being a fan of the new 6.0. Well, one of my friends bought a new 2005 2500 crew cab 6.0 and he likes it a lot.

What he does complain about though is gas mileage.

What can he do to improve the mileage realistically?

I know the intake and exhaust are obvious choices, but what about electronically tweaking it through the computer. All I seem to read about is computer mods for more speed or firmer shifts, etc. He's not really looking for that.

Is a FIPK really worth the money? Catbacks?

Any ideas out there?

A standard 87 octane tune will do the trick, probably get him anywhere from 1-3 mpg better depending on who you talk to plus it'll free up a little more power as well. He'll just need to keep his foot off of the noise pedal.

I did see an almost 2 mpg gain when I had the VaraRam intake (ram air version) on my truck but I pulled it when it looked like my wife was going to be driving it more often. I didn't want to take a chance on her getting into some high water with not knowing how to drive with that intake on. I sold it to a firend of mine with a very similarly equipped truck compared to mine and he sees about the same improvement that I did.

Three biggest savings:

1. Don't drive it unless you have to

2. Don't push the pedal too hard

3. Avoid oversized tires

Or ... think about the alternative of driving some little s**t car with a weed wacker engine and the cost of fuel suddenly brings about a meaningful smile.

Intake and exhaust have never given me a whit of improvement in the gas mileage department. Very little in the power department either. Even if they give you a slight improvement, it would take 10 years to make up (in gas money) what you spent for the mods in the first place.

Like Frank said, and 87 octane tune is the best way to do it. Couple that with a lighter right foot, and he could probably see a lot better mileage.

But that's just my .02 :seeya:

What is an 87 octane tune?

I'll tell him about the vararam - price?

An 87 octane tune is taking out the PCM (main computer for the truck) and sending it off to have the programming codes optimized to run using 87 octane fuel. The programmers can spice things up a little more if you want to use 89, 91, or even 93 octane gas. There are several great posts on this site related to custom PCM tunes.

I see that Westers has a 87-91 tune, but I will never run over 89 in the truck. Do they make a 87-89 tune, or is the diffrence in the octane just not noticable enough to have it tuned for it?

Thanks
