New possible problem noticed this evening

About an hour ago, I started up my truck to come back from town and noticed the odometer and gear selector letters didn't light up.  I turned the truck on and off a few times, but it still didn't work.  While it was running, I flicked the instrument cluster with my finger, and presto, it lit up.  Tuened it on and off a few more times and it worked like it's suppose to.  Anyone else ever have this happen?  It was the first time it happened to me that i know of.  (almost 26,000 miles)

Is it in the illuminators themselves? (It was still racking up miles wasn't it?)

I haven't heard of this problem either, but since they are LED it must be a loose connection somewhere.  I'm thinking the computer has control over the odometer reading whether the lights are on or not.

I'd start looking at the dimmer first and then take it from there.

Well, I never moved once I noticed it.  I did turn the lights on to see if it would light, but it didn't.  I also rotated the dimmer and all the other interior lights worked like they were suppose to, except for the odometer lights.  As soon as I flicked it, it popped right up.

I'm thinking if I can get it to do it again, I'll see if the dealer will replace it with a '99 3/4 ton cluster, so I can get the tranny temp gauge, and let me pay the difference.  Hmm!  How can I get that thing to NOT light up again?

Hey Tom that happened to me 2 days ago sitting at the drive up window at the bank - dash lights, odometer, and even the radio display went, I turned radio off and back on and everything worked fine since. Thought I heard a click like when the auto lights come on I should have gotten out and looked to see if headlights worked but I was hit with a rush of Oh **** now what.

Tom, one more mod or part from another vehicle and you will have to change your sig to:

Admit it.  You got some Mercedes parts in there some where dont you????

I remember reading about this on the other board. If it's the same thing there was a TSB for it.

Thanks jimbello, I'll see if I can't find a TSB.

Newbie, no Benz parts, but you never know.  Maybe I could find some headlight wiper blades.  I could get two sets and put one on the tail lights.  LOL

You should still be under warranty, I would at least get it on record with the dealership, even if they can't track it down right away.

I noticed that the dash light dimmer switch got REALLY hot when I was driving at night...I kept the lights pretty dim, so the rheostat resistor was working pretty hard, but it seemed that it shouldn't have gotten so hot.

My dash does that too, when I start the truck the light comes on and then goes off for a bit, when I shift into drive it takes a few seconds for the light to come on, also it doesn't go on in neutral, but I can't remember if it ever did.  Every other truck I've see the indicator light follows through the gears.
