improving MPG

I am sure this issue has been brought up many many times but I was wondering if you guys had any tips on how to improve my mpg

Slow down, keep your tires up to the pressure indicated on the door sticker, keep your tailgate up and get a tonneau cover and use it, empty everything you dont need out of your vehicle (lighter is better) & drive like you have and Egg on the gas pedal, look at the conditions way down the road and adjust speed accordingly. Oil,filters & tuneup as required in the owners manual.

As (mcreyaufmiller)

has said cheaper to go slow and save gas & money & possibly your life.

Life is short dont waste it. Seems like only yesterday i was 21.

5W30 oil, clean air filter, air the tires up to the max listed on the sidewall not what the vehicle lists. Slow down. My MPG meter shows the best speed approx 60 mph.

thanks guys I will be keeping these in mind and will also be chekcing for the door stickers to tell me tire pressure

P.S if any of you guys are from Edmonton AB CA do you have any suggestions as to where I could find a owners manual cheap

What vehicle are you looking for an owners manual for? I would check ebay. I've sold 2 recently. They usually have quite a few and go for a lot cheaper than a dealer would charge you.

Try to avoid stop and go traffic - that'll kill your MPGs even if you have a tonneau and good PCM tune. Nothing worse than dumping all that fuel to get the truck moving and then forced to stop 1/2 mile down the road.

Plan your driving accordingly. Don't make four separate trips to the same area - make one trip out and take care of all your needs at once. I've been working on ways to get places with minimal traffic lights, stop signs, etc. Doing well for a few locations so far - also finding myself walking to stores when possible.

If you have more than 1 vehicle, use the most fuel efficient one as often as possible. Also, don't take 2 vehicles to the same location (and be like my parents and my sister this past weekend). Oh, cut out the fast food and the daily Dunkin Donuts - not only will you save some cash but your body will thank you - heck I've lost weight.

Now I'm looking at the trains to see if there's a way I can take a train to work every day (30 mile commute each way with lots of traffic now that the summer vacation time is over).

Oh, and watch out for that jack*** in the little sports coupe (honda/nissan/toyota/lexus/etc) tailgating you .... high gas prices don't seem to stop those guys from stomping on the pedal.

Yea...I think lately people get mad at me. I accelerate sloooow off the line. Hey...if they wanna fill up every other day thats fine with me, but I'm not going to.

I have noticed since the gas prices have gone up that drivers are decelerating more coming up to traffic lights instead of slamming on the brakes at the last minute and also accelerating slower from a stop. These high gas prices arent going away infact they predict 4-4.50 a gallon next year.

I am looking for a manual for my 03 sierra and I can fairly easily avoid stop and go traffic since I only have about a 20 mintue drive to where I work though it does amaze me how dumb some of those import drivers get at some point I think they are tring to draft off me

All good info here. What I did to get a little better mpg on a 2000 Silverado 2500.

1)Cold air intake

2)Magnaflow muffler

3)Nelson 89-93 tune

4)Tonneau cover

5)Upped the tire pressure to 65 &70psi

I have about $1000 in the mods above. I have gained about 1.5 to 2 mpg burning premium gas. That's about 13% better mpg, but premium gas is about 7% higher. It's going to take a long time to pay for the mods. But truck run a lot better, more fun to drive. And I would rather give my money to Nelson, muffler shop, etc, than the oil companies.

F_L - what kind of Cold Air intake did you get?

Btw, anyone know of a place that makes bumper stickers? I want one saying in really tiny print: "If you can read this - BACK THE **** OFF"

Alternatively: "Why are you reading this - watch my brake lights jack***"

Jim,

I got a cheap intake off ebay for around $50. Couldn't bring myself to spend the $200+ for K&N or other big name intakes.

    • Yes, and also pulling heavy trailers or a large camper up steep grades as well as descending grades such as the more rustic off road camping locations and using engine braking with that low gearing as well as soft ground can just suck the power . I realize pickups these days tend to have an over all lower first gear ratio compared to automatic transmission pickups from years back so that has helped a lot in its ability in high range but there comes a point if in four wheel drive the torque runs out at the wheels, certainly with a gas engine. They don't put two speed transfer cases on pickups for a cool factor, they have a function if one needs that massive torque to the wheels that high range can't deliver.
    • Notes 7/18/2026   3,400 miles on this batch of Mobil 1 Euro 5W40 since the GDI pump replacement. Alcohol runs very clean when ring seal is tight and the sump isn't getting hosed with fuel. Checked oil level at fill up today as is my practice and grabbed a white Kleenex to look at the color. What color?  I was going to change it but.....
    • 4 low is really nice on steep boat ramps.
    • Interesting, I suspect I would have fueled up in Lee Vining as the day prior I would have filled up either in Laughlin or near there and maybe again before I entered Death Valley and once out the other side late that evening as I kept on driving into the night up near Lee Vining. Next morning I most likely fueled up in LV before heading over Tioga Pass into ( as I refer to it as "Yose .... Mite" 😁 ). And again that was 19 years ago but the price then must not have jumped out at me like the 5 bill a gallon theme of nutty cult hippy country Big Sir or head so far up their rear Aspen. I'd be curious to know where the highest prices are in the lower 48, I probably would not be far off to guess somewhere in Cali forn ie. Coldfoot and Prudhoe bay may have those prices beat but that is a whole other world up there and when prices are more normal elsewhere that is about what they can be up there I believe in no mans land. Anyway interesting that the 395 corridor is hosing people and the thing is, its tourist season and its not like there are a lot of competition options when driving up that highway from what I could see. Yup, big ole Boaterhomes and various other RV's ahead and behind me at the Yosemite entrance gate and they have to get their fuel somewhere.
    • Those can be high, as well as the big California cities. The ones that will pop your eyes out are the 395 corridor on the Eastern side of the Sierra Nevadas. Lee Vining, $7.19 for regular and $8.89 for diesel is what the Google said right now.
