Clicking noise from under dash?!?!

Recommended Posts

Does anyone else ever hear a clicking noise coming from under the dash around the steering colum? It only seems to do it on a random basis for a few minutes after the car is started. I also heard it start doing it once when I did not start the truck but had the key in the on position. It almost sounds like a timer clicking off ticks every second or so.

Thanks!!

I hear it on mine. My guess it is is related to the driving lights/headlights. Mine also goes away after the first 10 seconds.

Anyone else?

Had the same problem recently. It is an actuator/solenoid (not sure on the term) for the automatic climate control system. They had to replace the device.

Put your climate control to auto and change the heat range from cold to hot. When you hear the noise Reach up under the dash feel to the right of the steering column. You should find a small device that has what feels like a turn wheel. The wheel clicks back and forth.

Took it in and it was replaced under warranty. Sounds like a common accurance.

An easy way to diagnose a noisy actuator and even be able to tell which one is to operate the various control as mentioned.

When it's making the noise, change the temp levers (or dial if auto air) one side at a time. If one of those stops the noise, it's that side's temp actuator. If that doesn't do it, change the mode from floor to vent or vice versa and see if that does it.

One of those two actions will almost always narrow it down to the noisy actuator for you. And as stated, sometimes putting one of those in a different position when it's not making noise will cause it to make noise.

On the full size trucks, we see a lot of left temp actuators and almost as many mode actuators.

If you are talking about what I am thinking, I had that problem 7 months ago. They replaced my cluster saying that is was the gears for the dials. No more problems, but I still get a knock under the dash when the defroster and heat are on. Anyways, I do not know if that helps.
