Off Road Lights on the Fog Light wiring?

Recommended Posts

I'm wondering if anyone can help me out with a light issue I have.

I am wondering if I can hook up some off road driving lights of about 55W to the wiring I have for my fog lights. After ripping off 2 sets in the woods of the fog lights, I'm wondering if I can use the existing switch and wiring to hook up some of those off road driving lights I see at the auto parts stores.

I'm planning on mounting them to my bumper.

Thanks for any comments. It's a 2000 GMC Seirra 1500 SLE

Cool. Thanks. I guess I'm wondering if there is any difference to what they market as fog lights and as off road driving lights. I guess if they are both 55 watts it doesn't matter.

The guy at NAPA told me to be careful of different voltages?

Different voltages? They all should be 12V. It is the amp load that is different. The higher the wattage bulb, the more current it draws. The wire guage is based on temp, which correlates to amperage. Use the formula P/E to get the amp rating. 55/12=4.6amps per bulb = 9.2 total amp draw for both lights. Check the fuse for your fogs and see if your within it's rating and you should be fine.

Thanks for the help. I will look into watts of the lights I'm looking at and do the match and verify the fuse. I'm hoping to get some picture of my truck up shortly.

Does anyone know what the standard fuse(10amp?) is for this? I don't have my truck or a chart handy.

IS this a fuse in the box, or an inline fuse I will have to dig for?
