Is everyone sticking to the recommended PF59 in the newer 5.3l engines?Or are there good(better) substitute filters?  TIA!

Welcome to the site and forum!

I have stuck w/ the PF59, although some members here have indicated they have had difficulty finding them.  Some people here also use Mobil1 filters - I have never tried them.

By the way, don't substitute the PF58 - better to get another brand altogether if they are temporatily out of PF59s.

Well, that's my $0.02! :D

yep i still have 4 PF59's

I may go with the AC PF59 gold version or whatever.  Higher quality.

Ryan, offhand, do you know what AC touts as the advantages of the "gold" version?

Thanks

My guesses:

1) filtering for smaller particles

2) better anti-drainback flap

Back a few years ago Purolator made Ac Delco filters, I don't know if they still do??? Any way I've stuck with the GM filters over the years, most dealership parts counters up here in Canada have case lot pricing on this stuff. the PF59 filter prices have crashed from the high $12.00can they were when I bought onre of the first silverados. Now at my local dealership parts counter they are down to $3.00 case lot price. Have also noticed over the years that GM must of felt they were losing a lot of sales by being none competative on these types of things...everything from washer fluid to filters and there prices are very good if not the lowest I have found. I have always felt that if anything did go wrong with an engine at least they could not claim poor oil filtration because of some one elses filter.

Didn't you guys hear the news? AC Delco has discontinued all of the "UPF" line except 1 filter for the Corvettes. I think it's a UPF44 (?). Nobody stocks the UPF59 anymore. A lot of guys say the Mobil1 filter is comparable, but at $10.99 it makes 3000 mile oil changes expensive. Especially if your running Mobil 1 synthetic. I'm using PF59 with Mobil 1 synthetic.

If you happen to find someone that is stocking them, please post. :but:

when i changed oil the other week, i went into autozone to get a pf 59...well they didnt have one, so i was going to look up another brand because i needed a filter..well i looked up the specifications for my truck...it said pf58 would work. so i picked a pf58 up and put it on..no problems

i have been using pf59's for 2.5 yrs so far, i wonder why autozone's manual said that the 58's would work

PF58's work however they do not have the anit drain back valve that the PF59's (chevy recommends) do .

Id personally take off the 58 and put a 59 on

as ryan said i would find a 59 for it seeing how it is designed for the trucks, the 58 has been out for years used them on all the 80's small block olds and almost evey caddy since mid 80's they are not specifily for the trucks im sure gm made this new filter for a reason

Autozone is a bit out of my way but would be worth the trip if they carry Mobil 1 filters. Does anyone know if they do? I use PF59 and after the truck sits a few days it still drains back the oil from the lifters.

the autozone by my house carries mobil 1 oil filters

Only difference between a PF59 and 58 is that the 59 has the anti-drainback valve and the 58 doesn't. Being that the filter sits upright, it doesn't really matter.

These are my favorites, no reason why, just like that little nut on the bottom as it makes it easier to take the filter off

All of the lubricated surfaces are above the filter and will drain back through the filter into the crankcase over a period of time. Mobil 1 5w 30 drains back even faster. The anti drainback valve adds some cost to the filter but well worth it.
