I read in my manual that I have a HEPA filter under the glove box of my truck. . Was this just a option or do all trucks have them . I have two sierra's, one is a  2001 2500 the other is a 1999 1500 . I have looked in both trucks and I cant find the access panel or the filter. If any one could shed some light on this subject I would be greatful.

in the general maintenance there is a writeup about this

Its located under the glovebox.  There is a black shield thing by your feet you have to remove 3 screws and its under there

very carefully it was a PITA

actually i broke that 3rd scew off.  So now once a wk i gotta punch the whole thing up cause it slightly falls down

I havent fixed it in a yr who cares no one sees it

you dont have to take the screw by the trans. hump all the way out i didnt went i took mine out last week.  just unscrew it enough and it should give you enough room to take out the filter. oh and dont forget there is two filters in there. :D

Exactly.  I only loosened the one over the hump about half-way and just pulled the cover out of the way.   ;)

I'd like to know what y'all used to loosen that 3rd one, seems like all the tools I have are too big to get into that little space??

I can't remember what size the socket was, but I used an appropriate sized 1/4 inch drive socket, a 1/4 drive flex drive (about 4-5 inches long), and a 1/4 inch drive ratchet.  :D

I didn't have a "flex-drive" when I took a look at mine.  It's been a while since I took that panel off.  I took all the screws out-and got them all back in (much to my pain and great surprise  :D ).  I do remember it was a combination of lying on my back on the floor, 1/4 drive ratchet with I think a 3" extension (possibly with an additional 1") and a normal nutdriver.  I think I put the extensions together, while the socket was on the nut.  I'll have to check when I get back home.

I removed two of the three screws. the third being off to the left didn't require removal. We are fortunate that GM loves plastic. I slowly pulled on the plastice enough to remove and replace both filters without causing any damage. Being a lazy person, I couldn't figure out why everyone was removing all three screws, or even loosening it when it wasn't required to get at the filters.

Changed the filters last weekend. what a dummy I also broke the plastic on the third screw (the one behind the console). I just slightly pulled it down and the plastic broke off because all the trheads were not out. I used a 7mm socket. Then I had to be very careful with the clip on the filter housing. I plan to write to GM about this design. They can easily have a metal clip and u strut instead of that thin plastic. Especially for something that has to be replaced every 15,000 miles. The two filters were quire dirty on myt wife's truck (15, 283 miles). I also changed the rear and front defferential liquid. the GM liquid (75w-90 synthetic) for the rear was about $27 a quart. It took about 2.5 qts. The front took about 3.5 pts of regular 80W-90. The filters (package of two were about $28 for the two. Also changed the oil (3rd oil, change with Mobil1 synthetic and AC Delco PF59 oil filter. Oh yes and I also did a lube job (2nd one). I replaced some zerks with 90 degree ones for easier access. You have to remove both the metal skid plate and the black cover behind the bumper for access. I took it to the dealer for tire rotation balance and alighment. while there he said that my shocks were not painted at the factory and he ordered two repalcements because they were rusting! check your shocks. My wife's truck is a 2000 Z71, 5.3, 3.73 . :D
