2000 Impala Front end problems?

Gm-Tech I was hoping you could possibly help here. On my 2000 Impala I have a Knock type noise from the front end (drivers side I believe) when turning occasionally and when I hit a large bump (curb going into my driveway is a good example). Any idea of what this could be? I know it isnt the steering shaft because it exhibits that and this cannot be felt through the steering wheel like the sahft can be.

We have some tie rod end issues too, and that'd be my next GUESS after an I-shaft.

What about the subframe? Weren't there issues with some welds on those?

Yes, but it didn't cause a knock noise. It was more of a creak/crackle and you didn't have to go over a big bump. The slightest movement that caused the subframe to twist would result in the noise.

Sometimes just turning the wheel will cause the noise. I cannot see or feel abnything wrong with anything in the front end. Anything visually or by moving I could tell if it is wrong. Rotated the tires yesterday (20 degrees out mind you) and I didnt notice any looseness

Ok heres an update.

 

While driving back home i noticed some things.

 

It was make the noise when the car is put into reverse (pop in front end). It will also make the noise when shifting gears up to 2nd.

 

Dont think its a bad CV because the steering is fine.

 

Supposedly there is a torquebar in these cars? Bushing bad? Possibility?

 

Engine cradle issue???

Had some cradle bushing issues that would cause a pop when stopping or first starting out. The fix involved putting a little plastic shim between the bushing and the cradle.

 

No idea what a "torquebar" is. There's nothing by that name that I can think of.

Clunk/Pop Noise From Front of Vehicle (Shim Rear Frame/Cradle Mounts) #00-08-61-003 - (Oct 17, 2000)

 

2000 Chevrolet Impala, Monte Carlo

 

Condition

 

Some customers may comment about a clunk or pop type noise coming from the front of the vehicle. This condition can be duplicated and is most apparent during either a heavy acceleration from a stop or moderate to heavy brake apply at low speeds.

 

Cause

 

This condition may be caused by fore/aft movement of the two rear frame/cradle mounts in the frame/cradle assembly.

 

Correction

 

Install shim material contained in service kit, P/N 10306243, between the rear mounts and the frame/cradle assembly, using the following procedure:

 

Raise vehicle and support the rear of the frame/cradle assembly.

Remove the two rear frame/cradle mount bolts and the lower retainers.

Lower the rear of the frame/cradle assembly 50 mm (2 in).

Remove the two rear mount upper insulators.

Remove the two rear mount lower insulators.

Cut shim material contained in service kit, P/N 10306243, into four equal pieces 25 mm X 62 mm (1 in X 2½ in).

 

 

 

With the shiny surface of the shim material facing away from the mount lower insulators, position a piece of the shim material (1) on both the fore and aft surfaces of the insulators as shown in the figure.

While holding the shim material (1) in position, install lower insulators into the frame/cradle assembly.

Generously lubricate the upper insulators with rubber lubricate, P/N 12345884 and install.

Raise the rear of the frame/cradle assembly up to the vehicle underbody.

Install mount lower insulator retainers and hand start frame/cradle mount bolts.

 

Tighten

Tighten the frame/cradle mount bolts to 160 N·m (118 lb ft).

 

Remove the support and lower the vehicle.
