Auto Volume Doesn't Work

I have a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado Z71 Crew cab. I believe the auto volume feature worked on the head unit when I first purchased the truck, but it doesn't work now. I have had the factory speakers replaced and I think that might be the culprit. Is this an easy fix or do I need to take it to the dealer? It is the XM, CD, cassette head unit.

Also, I've got a couple of rattles inside the cab that are driving me nuts. :) Will the dealers try to correct this, or do I just have to deal with it?

Thanks!

i've had a ton of rattles and clicks in the dash which once i got the dealer to hear them they fixed them no problem...it just took a bunch of visits to the dealer

Thanks psu05 for the reply.

You mentioned the clicks. I have other rattles as well, but I am having some clicks down by my knees somewhere on the driver's side. It seems to happen when I take off from a stop. I'm wondering if it has something to do with the heater since I don't remember it happening this summer after I bought it. It's probably not related, but it seems like the right timing.

When I first got my 05 there were no rattles or squeaks. After my first oil change, they all surfaced like little gremlins. When I start the truck in the morning or cold, there is a ticking sound behind the steering wheel dash area. When I drive on bumpy roads, the driver's side doors (front & ext. cab) squeak like crazy and rattle too. The driver's seat squeaks and so does the front suspension and brakes.

The solution by GM was obviously the Auto Vol (HIGH) setting. I really like this feature...seriously. Without it, I just might have taken the truck in to get looked at.

I'd put up with squeaks and rattles over broken and defective parts such as those on my last Ford truck.

I just tell myself it's a truck and was built for working not cruising around while sipping a latte. If I wanted tight and flawless, I'd buy a luxury car.

i've had a clicking behind the radio area that i was told is how gm recirculates the gas vapors...the tech opened the hood and had me hold the line that recirculates it and sure enough you can feel it pulsing...also had a squeek when i would put the brakes on and off and that ended up being a new brake booster....also had a snapping sound when torque would be applied when leaving a traffic signal...that was a new rear driveshaft

i've also got the tight power steering which i guess is normal according to the tech adn my high beams went out the other night but work again so i don't know what that one is

I don't see where the speakers would have anything to do with it. The volume is controlled by the radio, not the speakers.

Silly question, but are you sure SCV (speed compensated volume) is on? There isn't a massive change in volume, even on the high setting, but it should be noticeable. Most customers seem to notice it most when slowing down. Then they bring their vehicle in complaining the radio volume reduces as they slow down. :)

You have a warranty. Take the truck in...!!!

The 05 CrewCab is tight - tight - tight. Very quiet, very smooth. Shouldn't squeak, click, or pop. Take it in if it does. Maybe the guys who did your oil change did a courtesy wipe down of the door gaskets using the wrong lube. Squeaky seats, creaking-sound from the seats, plastic rattles, clicks. That is all warranty.

Again, warranty.... Where it might not be warranty is if aftermarket stereo wiring with plastic connectors is used and the connectors are not tie-wrapped against a structure, thus rattling. No 1-year old vehicle, even a Ford, rattles and squeaks without it being a warranty issue. Take it in.

I just sheduled a appointment for next week for getting my steering shaft replaced "told them new shaft no crap lube job i will be putting a notch in the shaft to make sure it is not the same one" and for many interior noises! One i kind of solved with clicking the rear seat belt in place which has stopped the main noise for the most part. But dont think i should have to drive around with it like that so will be making them replace.

Problem most mechanics lose there shirt when it comes to rattles and interior noises but i payed a crap load of money for this truck and expect this kind of stuff at 70-80k not 8!So i will be bringing it back as many times as it takes for them to get it right.

GM-Tech, I am sure that I have the SCV on. I have tried the different levels and there is no difference. My girlfriend has an Olds Alero that this feature works well. In her car you know it is working.

Thanks for all of the discussion about the rattling, clicking, and squeaking. I've never owned a brand new vehicle and thus didn't know how the dealers handled such a thing with the warranty.

Glad to see I'm not the only one with a noise problem....

My drivers side seat is starting to drive me nuts! Every time I climb in, it makes this strange squeaking sound, then once I lean against the back of the seat, it makes a squeaky sound like and old door or something. My truck is and 05 Sierra with 10,000 miles on it! And I'm not some huge fat guy or anything... actually I have seen big fat guys with older trucks than mine(at the shop I work at) and the seats are perfectly quiet. Definetly going to take this to the dealer, even though they will probably just tighten the bolts on the floor or something like that.

After going through warranty issues before even taking delivery of the truck......heavy alkaline water spotting on all the windows and body in addition to scratched passenger side mirror without ever being resolved, I eventually ordered some glass restorer to remove all spotting, paint cleaner to remove spotting on body, and never resolved the mirror scratch issue. The dealer kept the truck for an entire week and never did a darn thing other than give me a loaner car and let a peach tree drip sapp and fruit into the bed. I filled out the GMC owner survey to rate the dealer (Westminster Pontiac/Buick/GMC) as poor overall and sent an accompanying 2 page letter expressing my dissatisfaction. A month later I received a call from a GMC Customer Care rep that spoke english like he was in an India call center. He basically told me it was unfortunate and they were sorry but to take the truck back until it's fixed. UNFORTUNATELY, I do not have the time to play the yoyo go back game so unless my truck is seriously messed up, I will not be taking it back for little quality control warranty issues. It will just get me all irritated to have my truck down for a few days without ever being fixed (call me negative but I've experienced way more than enough). I went through it with Ford and it's a serious P.I.T.A. but at least their Customer Care mediated the entire ordeal so it put pressure on the dealer to eventually get the problems resolved.

As for the oil changes and routine maintenance, I do it all myself so I do lube everything including door hinges but they still rattle/squeak probably due to coming out of alignment (pretty common on Ext. Cab doors).

Hopefully, GM will come around and see that quality control will be tighter and production/labor cheaper with increased robotic production lines such as the soon to be number 1 auto maker.
