Stereo Removal Instructions

I'm new to this forum and tried to find out my answers by searching, but didn't find what I was looking for. So, here goes...

 

I eventually want to build a carPC for my 2003 Silverado. I would like to use the PC as my HU and replace the stock stereo with a touchscreen LCD. After reading some of these forums I have a few questions...

 

1) Stupid question...how do I remove the stock stereo? Can I just remove the panel around the stereo or do I have to remove the entire dash?

 

2) I've seen the adapters to maintain the alert signals and radio power after the engine is off. Do I have to use this with the existing HU or can it be used with my carPC? If I can't use this with the carPC, is there a way to maintain this functionality with the carPC?

 

3) I will probably run the output from the PC sound card through an amplifier. Any recommendations as to brand, specs, etc?

 

4) Are there any other things I need to know about before replacing the HU? Will I have to take the truck to the dealer to have anything done?

1. Just remove (pull off) the trim panel that surrounds the radio, speedometer, etc. Then remove the radio. 3 or 4 screws all visible. Sometimes it helps to remove the heater controls. It's easy to do (takes about a minute), and gives you more room to work and also prevents you from scratching the heater controls. Just take out 2 screws, release the plastic clips (next to the screws) and let it dangle.

 

2. You'll need to buy an aftermarket adapter if you want "retained accessory power." But actually, RAP is stupid. Why would you relinquish control of the radio power to a timer that pretends to know that you want to continue to listen to the radio, but only for 20 minutes, after you turn the truck off? And if you open the door, the radio shuts off. Cute, but embarassingly stupid, if you ask me. Other enlightened installers have bagged the RAP, saved themselves $80, and hooked up to a fuse that switches on with the ignition.
