Heated garage?

Electric or gas?

I'm planning on heating a 26' x 30' garage this winter. Does anybody have some advice on gas or electric? My buddy just built a new garage and installed two Dimplex 4KW electric heaters and I can't believe how warm his shop is. The heaters only cost him 150 each.

I need some pros and cons either way.

The garage is fully insulated and it does have it's own service panel. Also, it is a detached garage.

Thanks for the help.

It depends on your climate. The advantage to electricity is that you don't have the Carbon Monoxide problem/risk but your electric bill will be pretty big. I'm not that familiar, though, with gas. Everything is electric in my house and we don't use the heater much here in AZ although there are some days that it gets kind of nippy.

I use a 15000/20000 BTU Propane or a Kerosene heater.

Where are you at, so we can get an idea how often you may be using it and how cold it'll be around you. I had the builder rough in a gas line when I had the house built in 03. I then picked up a Rite Temp I believe gas heater. I forget the exact size, but it mounts on the wall and has a 1-5 temperature/heat control. This thing will keep putting out heat unless you shut it off. it's good if you know you're going out to the garage and will be out there for a while, but for a general leave it and forget it, this wouldn't be getting the call from me being that it doesn't automatically shutoff. Also, my garage is attached.

I live in North Dakota. So, yeah heated garages are a necessity. Right now it's unseasonably warm in ND. We have just enough snow to show up on the grass and it's 35 degrees.

Usually normal temps in Jan are around the teens. It's not out of the ordinary for the lows to hit -40 with wind chill.

I hate to say it, but today I decided to sell my 02 GMC HD. It's a sad day, but I've got a company pickup now and my personal unit just sits in its unheated garage and takes up space. I think we're gonna ditch my wifes honda too and get her a yukon.

Thanks for the posts.

I am a gas tech and I dont reccommend ventless gas heaters anywhere. Expecially in a garage full of fuel etc. I would go with a vented unit heater like maybe a HotShot. See the specs HERE. These are great little units although you problably shouldnt do the install yourself. Venting is a piece of cake but if your homeowners insurance found out you ran your own gas lines theyd have a fit im sure.

Ditto this...I used to sell and install fireplaces and we had nothing to do with ventless stuff...they are dangerous...personally if you have access to wood or corn i would go that direction...i have put many of wood stoves in garages and they do fine...another option would be pellet stove...initially they are costly but the bags of pellets arent to bad...gas is okay also if you want to pay for it but just dont get ventless
