Hi everyone, I just got a new 2006 1500 for a work truck from the company i work for. It has a factory am/fm radio. I would like to install another radio with a CD player, but i dont know what all i would have to do. Any help would be greatly appriciated. Keep in mind it is a company truck so i want to make the change for a reasonable amount of money, and yet keep the dash looking nice and as stock as possible.

Will a factory radio with a CD player work without making a whole lot of changes?

thanks again

You can upgrade to a better radio, but unless you buy a brand new one it will have a previous VIN stored in it that has to be cleared.

Check out www.ebaymotors.com and look for a headunit preferably from a GMT800 truck (Silverado/1500, Tahoe, Escalade, Suburban, Yukon etc). You can get a CD only, CD/tape, CD6 changer, navigation, lots of options. You install the unit, swapping your existing one out. When you turn the key on the screen will show "LOCKED" and the radio won't function. Take the truck to the local GM dealer and ask them to unlock the radio. They will hook up the Tech 2 scanner to the truck and do a "Clear Theftlock information" command and it will remove the previous VIN. Then they cycle the key off and on and the radio will tie itself to YOUR trucks VIN. All done. Some dealers will do for free, some will charge 40-50 bucks.

The radio you buy HAS to be a Delphi double-din unit from a 2003+ full-size GM truck/SUV if you don't want any problems.

A dumb question- I have a 2005 silverado work truck; a tech for one of the radio vendors told me "The problem is the W/T BCM will not accept the programming for the cass/cd." Is that correct? Is that what you are referring to when you say to have the dealer release the vin code thing? Sorry if I'm dense.

Hi,

Same situation here. I bought a 6-cd changer factory gm radio off ebay for my company vehicle. It works fine, but on power up it displays "cal err". Like I said, it works fine, just that little reminder every time the unit powers up. The radio cost me 175.00 plus shipping.

On Friday I put in a UB0 (AM/FM/CD) in my WT that came with a UM7, AM/FM only. I waited 6 weeks for it on eBay, because the GM Tech told me in another post, that a radio from an '03 or '04 may not program. There's a zillion PNs out there. And while it may fit, it may or may not program. The one I got was from an '05 Trailblazer (I have an '06 Sierra). I got it for $100 shipped, and the programming cost me $45 at the dealer. It looks like a brand new radio. It sounds better also. I'm now contemplating a speaker change, but have not gotten any answers to my post. BTW, the UM7 and UB0 come with the same speaker package from the factory.

I have a similar question. My cd stopped working, though my radio and cassette play still work. One thing is I have the steering wheel audio controls. If I were to get another GM unit to replace it, hoping to be the same thing. After unlocking the radio, would the steering wheel audio controls still work?

Much appreciated,

Dave
