Engine Temps

Just curious how low engine temps would effect engine performance? Thermostat must have been changed or taken out at one time, it hardly ever gets above 160*.

Would this keep the Torque Converter from locking up?

Your profile says you are running a 1999 4wd. I would say you should put a t-stat in that thing immediately. Nothing on that engine is going to run to full capacity with it running so cold. Bad mileage, and bad for engine. That thing is made to operate at appropriate temperature, put a GM t-stat in.

As above, replace T-stat yesterday.

On a side-note, I just put Interceptor digital gauges in my truck, and when the gauge on the dash reads just a touch over 160, its actually around 120-125. Analog gauges work based on spring deformation, presumably they had to fudge the numbers in that range to get the right numbers at operating temp, at which both gauges agree.

Don't see why it would fool with the TC, but I can't say for certain. All NBS trucks monitor transmission temperature separately, whether or not they have the gauge on the dash. The Interceptor gauges also read that value.
