98 Z71 - 5.7 no start.

Everything has been running fine, then this morning the truck would not start. It turns over fine and once in a while gives a few coughs like it wants to start, but nothing. I also get a smell of gas after trying to start the truck. There are no codes present at this time. Unfortunately, I am stuck in my driveway with snow on the way. At least it happened at home. It's a little cold and dark, but I will see if I can find anything. Any hints to guide me in the right direction would be appreciated.

PS. The truck has 230,000 km and has been running fine since I bought it 6 months ago, up until now anyway.

check for spark? When was the last time it was tuned up? My understanding is if its a crank sensor that went bad it will stop the injector from pulsing. So i would look at cap rotor, coil, wire or plugs . keep it simple.

Rookie: Thanks, Your 02 cents are pretty good. The problem was a cracked distributor cap. I had the cap and rotor changed and everything is back to normal.
