Last Friday heading up north I noticed my speedo started to bounce a little when slowing down. This week I am heading to work and I look down and see I am only doing 60 km/h when I know I am going much faster than that. It seems to stick in certain places. the other night when i shut it off it read 40 km/h. has anyone else had this problem??? I have an '04 Silverado SCEB Z71

Yes, I had the same problem, only my speedo would ramp up to 110mph when only going about 40 or so.

The painful cure was a speedo module change out for $400.00 I have an 03 with 113,000 miles, so mine lasted a little longer than it appears yours will.

Another thing, if it is your cluster module, this part is not made by GM so you must wait and wait for the replacement.

Mine did the same thing, but pegged the needle at 100 almost all the time. I fixed it by buying a whole new cluster for an esclade with a tranny temp guage in it. $320. I could have had it repaired for between $70-150, depending upon what was wrong and be with out my truck for 4 days or so. Ask for Chris Jenter at SOT Electronics, http://www.sotelectronics.com/repair_gm_ins.php3 He can tell you whats going on and what you could do.

Great, just great, another thing to look forward to on the NBS trucks.

I have had 5 new GMT800's and all have gone above 50K and not one has had this problem. Some of these problems are the way the owners have treated them. Jump starting with the key in on position, crossing the POS & NEG cables, running down the battery and never taking the time to recharge with a battery charger for at least 8+ hours are a few.

You only get out of your vehicle what you put into it.

I've put into my truck about $4000 worth of repairs since I got it, not including routine maintenance items such as oil change and tune ups. That's a little extreme don't you think? And I have treated my truck very very well. I'm sorry but GM has left a rather sour taste in my mouth. It used to be that one could get 100,000 miles out of their Chevy Truck with very little maintenance. That's how Chevy earned the reputation of the longest lasting, most dependable trucks on the road, but no more. I'll take a 1990-1998 Silverado over the 99+ any day. At least that's when GM knew how to build something decent. In fact, I'll probably end up with a 98 Z71 as soon as I get my 99 paid off.

Thanks guys - it is just out of warranty. I am at 42000 miles. I may try to get my dealer to cover it but I think I am SOL. I can use the tach to judge my speed so I don't really need the speedo.

Check e-bay for a used cluster should be able to purchase for less than $ 100.00. then have your local Speedometer repair shop reset odometer to your actual millage for around $ 50.00

OR

Purchase a new cluster for a HD series truck which will add a tranny temperature guage for less than $ 200.00 from GMPARTS.COM . then have local speedo shop re-set to actual millage.

It's real easy to swap out clusters, pop off the plastic trim around the front of the dash then remove 4 8MM bolts/screws that hold the cluster in place it's a "plug & play" deal.

If you need part #'s post on the forum there are several members that work at GM dealerships and will help out with the correct part #'s

Just talked to my dealer - he said they will try a reprogram first. He asked me how far out of warranty I am. Hopefully they help me out. An electrical component should not fail so quick. Anyone have this problem fixed with a reprogram??

I just noticed about two weeks ago my speedo not moving smoothly. I notice particularly when slowing down, it seems to jump, pause, jump, pause on a steady slow down. Is this an early symptom of this problem developing or is it something else?

Man, what a coincidence! My speedo started acting up this past weekend; I was just cruising along at freeway speeds (65-75 mph) and happened to notice that my speedo was now reading 40-ish. I thought maybe I had subconsciouslyslowed down a bit or perhaps had dropped down a gear...but the tach was still reading around 2K. I thought I was hallucinating until I noticed that my speedo was telling me I was passing vehicles at 30 mph; it even got to the point that when I was driving an actual 50 mph (pulled up nav diagnostic screen to see my speed), the speedometer needle was below zero...and in the meantime, all of the other gauges appeared to be reporting correctly! Anyways, after I shut the ignition and restarted my vehicle, the speedometer was reading correctly again.

I should take it into the dealer but I already know it will be a waste of time (other than for them to note it in the vehicle service history log) since I can't get the problem to reproduce...and if they can't see the problem, they can't/won't fix it--doesn't matter whether they believe you or not. Lucky for me I haven a GMPP extended warranty so I have another 30K miles of cushion...

Guys

i was at my dealer yesterday and they tried reprogramming it but it didn't work. It is now a little off but eventually catches up. They ordered me a new IP cluster and it will be in tomorrow. The good news is they are covering it under warranty even though I am over by 10000 km. Plus they are going to do my steering shaft for me as well. You can't beat a small town dealership

That is exactly how mine started. 2004 Silverado SBEC Z71. the mechanic told me it is a common problem

Yeah my 04 Silverado just crapped out the speedo! 46k on it and I'm freakin PISSED! I've owned this truck since june 30 2005 and i've already had to have environmental controls replaced, my driver side window gets stuck in the down position(although the Dealer cant replicate the issue so won't fix it) The stearing shaft fixed, now this with the instrument cluster. Plus when I put the truck in Reverse sometimes it won't go into gear....THis Blows!!! and I have 4 more years of payments to look forward to. ARGH!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Hey everyone, I recently had an issue with my 07 2500HD GMT900. My DRL’s stay on at all times. Right front turn and right mirror turn signal indicator stay on solid at all times. By “at all times” I mean the only way to make them go off is disconnecting the battery. I tore the headlight assemblies out, tried disconnecting the harnesses to eliminate bad wiring at the harness, I unplugged the headlight switch, no change and the mirror turn signal still stayed on. My first thoughts were : Bad bulb and/or socket somewhere, under hood fuse panel bad, bcm bad, tail light or trailer wiring problem, or some random short to power in the harness.  Possibly a bad ground but unlikely. I had a big clue in the fuse panel, it had a burnt smell. I started pulling every fuse that had to do with DRL or right turn/park lamp. Nothing made the right directional turn off but pulling the DRL2 fuse made the DRL’s go out.  After studying wiring diagrams, I found that both problems had that fuse panel in common, the bcm also controls both problems but knowing the fuse panel had a burnt smell I removed and disassembled the fuse panel and found a little corrosion on the printed circuit board.  I ordered a new fuse panel from Amazon for like $260. When it arrived I installed it, and put everything back together, the problem was fixed. I figured the fuse panel needed to be replaced anyway so that was a logical place to start. Hopefully this story helps someone in the future. Regretfully I didn’t scan for codes before I did everything.
    • That stinks. I’m sitting on the side of the road right now with the same issue. Never had an issue before taking it in for the ground strap recall. Now I’m outside of warranty and they’ll probably want $200 just to diagnose what they already “fixed”.
    • I wonder kind of nuts and bolts they will come up with next? Jim
    • “It should be recognized, however, that there becomes a point where fuel economy oils do not make much economic sense for the end consumer—we talk about a fuel saving of ~€100 compared to a risk of €1000 Euros if the oil is too thin and causes increased engine wear rates. However, the benefit of these oils accrues to the car manufacturers. If their vehicles can save 1–2% fuel by using a special fuel economy lubricant, then that OEM can drastically reduce the amount of fines they need to pay.”   I liked this and the following paragraph as well but it’s really only touching the beginning of the benefits OEMs see from spec’ing these oils. After you factor in “out of warranty” service work and new car sales when these engines fail before their time, it’s a good racket for them. Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get you!
