Will extreme cold set off ABS light?

So I leave a parking lot tonight and when I started the truck, the ABS light and red exclamation light came on. DIC message indicated "service brakes". Does anyone know if cold weather can trigger this sensor to come on?

Not that its really cold, but we have been enjoying a unseasonably warm winter here in Calgary. We finally got hit with a cold snap yesterday. -25 celcius. I am wondering if the sudden cold weather is playing havoc on my truck.

If this is a glitch, does anyone know if the computer will clear itself after a few trips, or am I no doubt making a trip to the dealership? My CEL for a loose gas cap eventually cleared itself within a day or two. If I have to take it to the dealership, what do I need to do to ensure they dont reflash my PCM and wipe out my Wester's tune?

Hopefully with the truck being in the garage, whatever is likely frozen will thaw. I havent had any brake problems to speak of, and assume (hopefully) its only a false alarm and will clear itself.

Any suggestions?

It shouldnt bother it you may have a problem go see your dealer. There will be an ABS code stored.

My wife's honda and my old tacoma would do it every time it got below freezing here. I usually notice it when the pads are getting about 3/4 worn too. I don't know if the fluid shrinks in the cold, but the level drops just enough to cause her light to come on. I just top it off and it stays fine all winter, until I do the brakes. Then I have to have bleed them down a little before pusing the pistons in.

My 2004 Silverado did the same today. Just a couple miles away from the dealer so just drove over.

Brakes worked but all those dern lights and the written warning were there.

Dealer said a TSB technical service bulletin covered the problem and ordered the parts.

Appears to be due to a bad ground (we'll see if that's the actual problem).

Service writer said that if the lights came back on that the brakes would function normally except for the ABS part.

The repair is supposed to cure this particular problem. It was the coldest day of the year today when the problem arose. Up until now it has been the mildest winter on record. It may be possible the problem is related to the extreme cold.

Will likely find out soon enough of the repair cures the problem.

Do u by chance happen to have the TSB number? As I suspected, after I let the truck sit in the garage for a bit, the code cleared itself. In fact, the very next time I started the truck the abs and brake lights were off.

thx

By all means try again and chose the 3500 and sort out that its the cab and box configuration you want and choose four wheel drive ( rather obvious to have a transfer case ) and to make sure the dually isn't chosen. I find or at least did a couple of years ago when I was sifting through the options that it would sometimes jump ahead after choosing the series of truck and in this case 3500 and skip some of the other initial configuration choices and have to watch the heading bar and sometimes back up by choosing the first in the series of option break downs. I think sometimes the computer will remember items that were last chosen and skip over the first part. Anyway go through it all and depending on the trim level chosen and I think the LT is one that may fall into that where the option of having the 4 high auto transfer case can be chosen, where as a High Country doesn't show that option as it just comes with the fancier ( not necessarily better though in terms of potential problems ) transfer case but for sure both transfer case choices are equipped with high and low range in the HD truck segment. Like Newdude said who works at a dealership, its the half tons that are the ones that will come with the single speed unless certain options or trim levels are chosen that add the two speed transfer case but as your looking at an HD, you don't have to worry about that hot mess.    One item that at least didn't show up and not sure if it does yet or not in the HD options on the manufactures pubic website is the upfitter in cab switch option if one is desiring that. Unfortunately its not wired in at the factory but the panel with the switches is on the dash but the wiring harness to be installed gets tossed under the rear seat to be installed by whomever after the fact to complete the installation.
    • Yesterday we brought home a 6yr  old Havanese dog from a nearby SPCA.  We've had her for 24 hours and we are delighted with how well she is adjusting to her new home.  It  was a huge decision to adopt a dog at this stage in our lives but we believe we made the right choice!   it was reported that her first 6 years were ones of neglect.  I think she's already realizing her life is going to get a whole lot better...  so is ours!
    • I thought I was building a HD 3500 srw, maybe I was lost.
    • No doubt, I definitely agree with you. However, considering the 6.2 and 3.0 have been catastrophically failing with very little miles, I figured I would put trouble free. I’m at 18,4xx and still not a single issue.
    • It’s never dry here but it gets hot. My 4 vehicles I keep at home drive an 18 mile loop. One 6 days a week. Two about 3 days each and one once a month. Only one goes on trips about 4 times a year 1000 to 2000 miles each time. One 26 years old gets driven once a month for 22 years. One 14 years old goes 6 days a week. The other two are recent at 2 and 4 years. All are performing normal no extra service other than that would be half of recommended or severe service in the maintenance manual. No extra water or steam out the exhaust or premature plug wear. I would consider an 18 mile loop would be enough. So apparently once a month at 18 miles for 22 years has kept the collector car running well. About 45 minutes a month.
