GM Extended warranty

Hello, I now have 45,000km on my 05 Z71. The dealer wants $2500.00CDN including taxes for extended warranty to take it another 3 years and up to 100,000km. Seems like a lot of cash but is it worth it?

I bought an extension for 6yr 100,000 mi from AAA (www.aaa.com) for like 1800 bucks. The nice thing about this is that you can take it to ANY garage for repairs, not just a GM dealer.

I dont know if Canada allows it but a GM warrenty is redeemable in the USA if you dont have any claims. You get about 80% back if you turn it it after end of term.

i opted out of my +30k miles warranty for 1300$.

 

they usually arent an issue until after 100k

 

they wouldnt be offering extended warranties if they werent making money

 

I got hosed on my last one, basically paid 1200$ for nothing.

 

they dont cover "wear" items and practically everythings a d**n wear item

 

for the 1300$ i can pretty much have anything fixed(not a motor of course) but it would be very rare for a stock chevy engine to blow with normal driving and great maintainence.

 

and the 1300$ was only the drivetrain warranty.

 

so yes in my eyes its a rip off.

Don't waste your money on an extended warranty. These are highly overpriced and rarely worth the money. If you are that worried about needing to have a major repair done then you are buying the wrong vehicle.

Waste of money. When I bought my truck the dealer was trying hard to sell me an extended warranty for about $ 1,800, and it was only 6 year, 72K that would not kick in until the regular 3 year/36k warranty has expired, and it had $ 100 deductible per repair visit. Lousy deal all things considered. And it was not even through GM but through some independent outfit that may go out of business by the time I need the warranty. The dealership is probably making a huge profit selling these warranties to people. I can find a lot better deal if I really needed it.

 

My experience has been that by the end of your factory warranty you pretty much take care of issues and a catastrophic engine or tranmsission failure is not likely to justify paying almost $ 2k extra to cover additional 3/36K miles. And remember, these extended warranties are not bumper to bumper warranties either, and many of them have a substantial out-of-pocket deductible per repair visit.

I have been thinking seriously about what you have been saying and I think you are right...its a big money grab. Better to put the 2 grand in bank and wait for repairs then give it away. I think you have convinced me to pass on this one.

It's really called a "SERVICE CONTRACT"

 

Put the $ 2,500 in a shrt term investment that you can pull out of in short notice when a big repair comes along.

 

I had Geico contract on a '99 Nissian Maxima cost about $ 350.00 it was well worth it just in the replacement of the window motors and operators (6 times)

or the time one of the cam drive pulleys broke off the cam shaft and w/ 0 clearance pistons.........

 

Also had the Geico on a '93 Jeep Cherokee for less than $ 500.00 it payed for itself.

 

But at $ 2,500.00 thats a lot of repairs that more than likely will not occur until 100,000 miles

I do not think Geico offers these cheap extended warranties any longer. I had a coworker who got his money back many times over because he only paid like $ 150 for an extended warranty thorugh Geico and submitted about $ 5000 worth of claims, which Geico supposedly paid. This was on a power seat defective track and cracked cylinder head on his Mazda 929. This happened about 12 years ago.

 

Obviously, Geico could not operate with premiums this low . I do not know what they charge now(if they ofer extended warranties at all).

I had three repair jobs on my '95 burb covered by my $1,400 extended warranty. For each, I had to pay a $200 deductible. That's $2,000 for three repair jobs that would have cost $1,100 had I just paid for them out of pocket. I passed on the warranty when I bought my last truck, and I don't regret it one bit.

Extended warrenties are not worth the money for me. I do all of my preventive maintenace myself, and I stay on top of it. Between my wife and I, we have owned 10-11 vehicles in our lifetime. We keep them ~5 years. I have never purchased an extended warrenty on any of them. I have never had a major breakdown on any of them. The only repairs I can recall on any of them has been little things like a u-joint, tailgate latch, 4x4 switch(service 4wd light coming on). Other than that on all of them, it has been just buying tires, batteries, brakes, and just changing engine oil and other fluids. I figure for the money I have saved by not buying the extended warrenty all these years(10vehicles x ~$2000=~20,000), if, and only if, I have a major breakdown, that should cover a new engine or transmission, if not a new truck. I've got the extended Total Plus (covers almost everything except maintenance items like belts, hoses, light bulbs and the like) With the price of labor rates (120/hr plus) and parts these days its very easy to come in for a 4 hour appointment and leave with a $1200 bill. Two of these trips and your warranty is paid for. Have an tranny go and you've easily got a $4000 repair tab on your hands...and thats a real weak link and problem spot on GM trucks these days. I've had it on all my previous trucks and it paid for itself at least two times over. For example: repair engine oil and coolant leaks: bill came out to $1100. Re-bearing the the rear diff: bill came out to $1500. Replace CD player: bill came out to $1000. I paid $1600 for the extended warranty on that truck and doing the math it more than paid for itself. Plus on trade in I still had some of the warranty remaining and got a premium for the trade because of that.

Stay with the GM waranty and go for the total plus package so your covered in the electronics dept, thats where it gets really expensive if you have to fix.

Oh, and I forgot, you can get zero deductible which doesn't cost all that much more. Thats the route I took. It's always no charge when you go in for warranty work then.

Another plus with the GM extended warranty is that if you have 3 months or more remaining on your policy, for a $100 fee you can purchase another extended warranty policy on your truck and keep it covered for even longer if you're going to keep it.

Never bought one for my '95, and now with my '05 I say 'nay'. I find with standard TLC to your vehicle, it'll last for a faithfully long time.
