I have a 01' 2500 and I would like to lose the 245 that it came with. I have read that some of you have put 285 on your trucks. How well did they fit? Do they rub at all? Which brand of tire? How wide of rim and what offset. some many questions so little time :)

My gf's dad has a 99 Shortbox Z71 with 285/75/16's on the stock rims, he has not had any trouble with them.  We put our trucks next to eachothers and I think his tires were 2 inches taller then my 265/75/16's

Alot of guys have put 285's on their trucks on this website.  It seems like they work well and only require a few turns on the front torsion bars for the added clearance.

Stepside Z put them on his truck, but it's not a 3/4 ton.  I think he had them on at the stock t-bar setting and cranked them up later on.  If i remember correctly, he had no problems with them before cranking the t-bars.

Here's his truck.

I cranked my torsion bars 5 turns befor I had the 285 BFGs installed and they do not rub at all. I am sure they will fit with out cranking the bars. I cranked my bars because the truck came from the factory with the front really low. If you crank your bars it will most likely throw the allignmet out but if you are planning on getting new tires then an allignment would be a good thing to do. If you have any questions feel free to pm or e-mail me.

285's on stock rims on my '02 1500HD without touching the torsion bars at all.  Mastercraft Courser A/T tires.  They look aggressive, but aren't loud at all.  I was surprised.  Excellent rain traction, with no hydroplaning.  Unbelievable grip in snow, too.

I ran my current 285 BFG's on stock wheels without any lift for a couple of months with no problem at all.

Now that I've got a body lift and 16x8 wheels, I rub a little when I'm fully locked left, but not enough to complain.

Go for it!  :)

What about the 285's on a 6.5" wide wheel as opposed to the 7" wides on the z-71's.  Are the 6.5's to narrow to properly fit a tire that large?

Ok im convinced on the tires but now I have to figure out the rims. What's backspacing on stock rims . I want to replace the chrome stocker. but keep the same backspacing. Hum any ideas.

There's a note on a BFG AT that says "do not mount on a 6.5 wheel"...  Maybe it's just for legal reasons?  :idontgetit:

My 285 65's are the same width as the 285 75's and they fit fine on my 2001 Tahoe LT's stock 16x6.5 alloys - you would think the 65's shorter sidewall would be even more of a fitment problem, and yes they do sorta pooch out but I think they look awesome.  Discount Tire was hesitant to put em on but once they did even they were surprised at how well they fit.

I went with 65's because I don't offroad much and wanted/needed better street/twisty bits performance and man I got it!  :)
