rear end

I have a 04 silverado 4x4 3.73's 24,000km

Last night i stopped, put the truck in reverse, and backed into a parking spot....i had to turn the wheel to fit into the spot...at that time, i heard and felt my rear wheel binding(dragging) ....i parked it and when i got out i could see where my rear tire was dragging.

This morning i left work and pulled out of my spot and turned onto the road...the inside rear wheel was binding and i could see how it left a mark on the pavemenet.

2 more turns then I hear a slight bang noise and my rear end was fine...now when i turn its back to normal

should i have the rear end looked at?

thanks in advance

Was the truck in 4WD when you made the turn? Part time 4WD systems are not designed to be used on hard pavement. Wheel binding can be expected to some extent, especially when turning. Don't use the 4WD mode on hard surface, or you'll do some major damage to your truck in time.

nope it was in 2wd....but the symptom was the same as if it was in 4wheel drive on dry pavement, but it was the rear wheels doing the binding....almost like the gear wasnt allowing the one tire to rotate at a different speed than the other

Do you have a locking rear differential? Maybe it is staying locked when not needed. Better have it checked out.

That is common with the G80 Lockers. They do it in the little 1500 8.6" rear axles all the way up to the big 3500 10.50" and 11.50" HD Rear Axles.

Don't worry about it. It will only do it sometimes, Detroit Lockers do it all the time.

From my experience I agree with Vhato, I have the G80 locker in my Z71 and occasionally it will lock up and stick if I make a tight turn...

Mine used to do it fairly often when I had to make a tight u-turn on a banked street to get into a parking lot for work...many more miles on the clock now and it still is working fine.

Well my comment is only if you have a G-80  Most Z71s and some 4X4s do, you can check by looking for the RPO code, there is a white label in your glove box that has a buch of codes on it, look for G80. If it is there, you have a Locking Rear Diff. If its, not, you just may have saved yourself $1600!!!
