'97 S10 Auto transmission

Hi

I am looking at a '97 S10 extended cab 2WD with a 4.3 v6 and auto transmission, the truck has 175K on it. I drove it a bit yesterday and it felt like the transmission was surging as I drove. The engine seemed to run fine and I am thinking the transmission was slipping. Does anyone have any experiences with the auto transmissions in the S10's?? Other than this issue, the truck was in pretty good shape though the A/C did not work (could need a charge) and the vent selector for the heat/defrost only let air blow though the defrost vents (vacuum hose off somewhere??)

Thanks for any input

at 175k it probably needs a trans rebuild. Especially if it has a hitch on it. Most people that have those don't realize that the engine will pull most anything that you can hook up to the truck, but that 4L60E just can't handle it so well.

Be careful, I have seen many trans problems related to engine problems ie catalytic converters stopped up, fuel filters stopped up ect. If it is slipping, you are probably best off with a SERTA from GM. Problem with a rebuild at that mileage is that every thing in the trans has a lot of wear but in a rebuild not everything gets replaced. If it did you would be way over the price of a SERTA.

Thanks for the feedback, I passed on this and am now looking at a 99 Sonoma with a 5 speed and I think I'd rather deal with a clutch issue with a standard than issues with an automatic...The truck is for my son (1st vehicle) so the less issues it has the better!!! :)

The 4l60 is a great trans when it has the right parts in it. They did not always hold up to high miles because of weaker parts installed at the factory I have seen several go above 100 k with no work done then I have seen some with 5 k getting a new valve body and a sunshell.

Defintely be careful with what you are looking at I read your last post and the 99 sonoma is a good choice as well.

Best of luck!
