GMC dealer lift

i was just a the gmc/chevy dealers tonight and asked them about lifting at the dealership to preserve warranty.. (even though ive heard about that one law that states dealerships cannont void your warranty unless they can prove it was the root cause)..

anyways.. the said that i couldnt request more than a 3" lift, and that if i had it done someplace else.. it had to be installed by a gm certified tech..

also.. they mentioned something about an $800 lift which was this real simple proceedure.. i forgot what it was called though.. something like a torsion lift? whats that all about?

thanks

A torsion lift? if they are talking about cranking up the torsion bars or installing different torsion bar keyways, stay away... It messes up your camber, and stiffens the ride on the front end, and you run the possibility of breaking a torsion bar.

There is no law that states a manufacturer must prove that a modification was the root cause of a problem. What you have heard of is the Magnuss-Moss Act. It does state that to deny a warranty claim they must prove in court that a modification caused the problem. Sounds great on paper, but one thing must be kept in mind... Manufacturers have lots of very good lawyers and a heck of a larger budget than the average consumer has. Plus the last thing they want is a precedent set in court that could leave them open to more warranty repairs of modified vehicles. So, they will tie the matter up until the consumer is broke.

I have seen this put to the test and Mazda of North America dried up the guys budget well before they got anywhere near a court room. Basic rule of thumb to remember is that if keeping your warranty is important to you, save the modding until after the warranty is expired or at least keep the mods limited to what you can yank off before taking it to the dealer.

I think you would need to replace the upper A arms with custom units to compensate for the different angle. I have seen lift kits for Nissan pickups supplied with new torsion bars and upper A arms.

so when looking into lift kits, i should make sure they include these items? I heard RCD is a good brand.. rancho and fabtech are also up there right?

Yeah, they will include those items. I'm not sure how the rancho lift works for these pickups, but it could include either taller steering knuckles, or drop brackets for the a-arms. Those kits should also include spacers to drop the crossmember where the torsion bar keyways sit to whatever height you're lifing the truck. 3" lift would drop the crossmember 3" down to keep the torsion bars in a natural positon. Personally i prefer the explorer procomp brand, but that's just me.
