I am new to the forum...............1st day. I bought my first Chevy everyday driver. I have had go fast Chevys in the past but this is my first true daily driver. I always like to gain as much knowledge as I can about my vehicles. I own a 1998 Z71 with the 5.7L. I was wondering what the HP and TQ ratings are on this particular engine? I would like to know what the competitions HP and TQ ratings are on the all new 5.3L for models 99' - 07'. Has the HP changed any on models 99'-07' for the 5.3L? I heard the 5.7L had different ratings from 96'-98'.......is this true? I just want a base line because I am beginning my HP gain modifications. Thanks for any and all info.

Welcome to GM-Trucks.com! :nono:

For 1998, 5.7l had approximately 255hp and 330 ft lb.

For the 5.3l, for 2002 it had 295hp and 325 ft lb.

This is the info that I could find.

GM

5.7L 350 engines

'88 - '95 TBI trucks - 210hp 310 ft-lbs

'96 - '98 Vortec - 255hp 330 ft-lbs

5.3L 327 engines

'99 Vortec - 270hp 320 ft-lbs (I think)

'00 - '04 Vortec - 285hp 325 ft-lbs

'04 - up Vortec - 295hp 330 ft-lbs SO

- 310 hp 325 ft-lbs HO

Dodge

5.9L 360

'94 - '99ish 235hp 330 ft-lbs

'99ish - up 245hp 345 ft-lbs

*not sure abotu teh 318's breakdown but I know they were getting about 215hp and just under 300ft-lbs at one time

Ford

5.4L 330 Triton

'97 - '98 - 235hp 330 ft-lbs

'99 - '03 - 255hp 360 ft-lbs

'04 - up - 300hp ??? ft-lbs

The important thing in looking at these numbers is not who has the biggest number, but who has the best numbers. All the hp in the world is useless in every day work and driving if it's not available until 5000 rpm and likewise, torque is important only if it's available down low to get you off the line. IMO the Vortec 350 trucks were the best engines followed by the good ol pushrod 360 from Dodge. Both of them had torque curves that came on low and stayed there...made towing a pleasure.

WOW! Thanks for all the knowlege you have on the big three. I would like to acheive 300HP, if possible, and was wondering where everyone else was on the HP scale. I think cold air intake, exhaust, Denso plugs, Amsoil and a performance tuner should get me there.
