What da f with these Toyota Yaris commercials?

Am I the only not getting the point of these Yaris commercials?

First commercial,

Piggy bank walks in, then stops and shakes at the sight of the Yaris.

Yaris then goes at the piggy bank with a saw then laser and finally breaks it with a hammer.

The Yaris then takes the money (coin) that was in the piggy bank and sticks it under it's hood.

Does that mean you have to beat up the kids in your neighbor to buy one of these?

Second commercial,

Mechanical little spider walking, Yaris runs over it and smashes it.

Yaris backs up then sucks up the "oil" from the spiders carcass.

Yaris doesn't use regular fuel? You need to steal little kids toy robots and squeeze the 2in1 oil out of them to make this car run?

I hate all car commercials, period. None of them are ever realistic. They're either stupid, snobbish or....um....stupid again. Not everyone who owns a luxury sports car drives along the Pacific Coast Highway and not everyone who owns a truck hauls boulders everywhere. Conversely, not everyone who owns a small economical car has a quirky personality.

I'll bet nine out of ten suv's never see a dirt trail!

I hate them

That's the 'cute' factor. And DeerHunter has a very good point, one that is seen all the time.

Caution: long post ahead.

I am under the impression that the Yaris is the next step in the sub-compact market. People who will want these cars are those types of people who will want a car that is (seemingly) smaller than the Geo/Chevy Metro LSi, more affordable that the midsize or the compact in some areas, (hence the piggy bank), more effiecent than the midsize or compacts (gas-spider that goes "Roar!" before getting crunched), and easy to modify (like the Toyota-owned Scion).

Why are these models getting so much focus? The gas "crisis"? The fact that fewer and fewer people are seeing a need/use for bigger vehicles? The want for a car that can get 40+ mpg and yet the only thing it can haul is the driver?

No clue. But then, do we really need to know why?

From an observer's POV (mine), the Toyota Yaris, Honda Fit, and the upcoming Nissan Versa as the new über pocket-rocket imports that the generations "Y", "Z", and so forth will love, and the vehicles that the domestics will strain to catch. The rest of us truck lovers will be left to our own devices of making our beloved truck-versioned I-4's, I-5's, I-6's, V6s' and V8's, diesel or gas, that much better.

I think it may be best said by the signature of LarryE:

We have become part of something much more complicated than you or I will ever fully comprehend. We build more than just trucks. . .  we build friendships, we build futures, we build our dreams.  We drive our trucks low and hold our heads high because we have an unwritten and unspoken agreement that we will live life to the fullest and never fall fall victim to 'the norm'.  Others laugh at us when we spend hours on end working on our trucks, yet shake our hands when we are done.

Obviously, the same can be said for the car people. Whether it's cars or trucks, there will always be a size for everyone, and it's all a matter of personal preference.

For what it's worth...because I've been drinking....

I don't get those commercials either. I think the Yaris wil be just another moving speed bump.

Well, for their purpose, these little cars are quite good. Should be a lot of sub-compacts arrving in America from overseas. Honda KIT is another one. These are far better than the 2007 AVEO.

Basically, they maximize their cargo space with disappearing fold-in floor rear seating. The bodies were designed around 6 feet tall humanoids meaning that either the Yaris, or the Kit, has more leg room than a luxury Lexus. Can't recall which one...

Gas mileage will be in the 30s - 40s, approaching optimal hybrid numbers (other than the 2-seater Honda Insight---the only real functional hybrid that delivers the numbers).

Keep an ear out for these. Reviewers in Singapore and other countries in that region have been praising these when compared again other sub-compacts.

Just don't squash them with your gas-luvin'-gas-suckin' 2.5 ton truck!

I'd like to call them my personal-sized ATV alternative!

Those commercials are aimed at the young, fun crowd. Of course, reality will be that they'll be cheap to run and for city driving. I like watching those classed cars sway when a semi passes them on the highway.

I'll keep my truck, thanks - at least I'll blind them when I come up from behind in the dark.

The commercials got your attention, and thats what their job is.

Another impression you could get from those ads is that for one (because it smashes your piggy bank and takes the money) is that it will nickle and dime you to death and from the fuel spider ad you could infer that its a gas guzzler. I doubt the car will be either of those, but you get the idea.

I agree the comercials are silly, but then again so is Howie Long hopping Larr-E's Chevy truck and pointing out to him that he can just drive off-road to avoid road construction.

But, I alos agree with Deere Daze in that the these comercials grab your attention. For me it wasn't how silly they were that grabbed my attention. It was two numbers. 40 MPG and starting at $12K.

I love my truck and I praise it's many uses. But, the $128 I dropped in gas in the last week is not one of the things I praise nor is the challenge of parking it in lots designed for compact cars.

So, the fact that I can now buy a vehicle the gets 40 MPG for less than 13K that comes with Toyota quality and is not hidous looking makes me stand up and take notice. I foresee this being my next daily driver. I'll always have a truck, but in the future the truck will be reserved for nights out and weekends. I'll let the little Yaris take the abuse of Hampton Roads traffic and parking on Norfolk Navy base. (But, I won't beat up any piggy banks.)

I like the new Fit, if they only made it in a two door. it's 38 MPG sounds nice. The Yaris looks like a deformed, crashed, UFO.

Well the comercial did one thing it got you to remember it and that in turn gets the word out on the product it describes you will forget a boring commerical, thats why they do that, but I look at it as if the commerical is stupid then I look at the product as stupid also.

I didn't remember the MPG nor the cost....my continual thought was what is the point of these commercials. The first come away was "why is a Toyota beating up a piggy bank?"

For the MPG and cost...I still didn't know until I saw someone post it here and read it.

The VW commercials for example...has the underlying message that the car is safe for it's occupants. After seeing that one 5 dozen times, I now know it's a Jetta.

So no one still can say what the point of "stealing" a coin from a piggy bank is trying to say.

The "subliminal" is you must break the bank to buy this thing.

If they really meant it was cheap to buy maybe they should have showed someone passing by a StarF##ks one time then come for their coffee in their new car.

(but then again doesn't one of them latte fluffy foam things cost about the same as a Bently?)

I'm not bashing these little things...they have a place and purpose. It's the commercial that annoys me.

All commericals annoy me. I am very certain the commerical for a Yaris or Kit that I would design would be so horrendously boring. It would be so boringly factual: Near hybrid MPG, amazing storage in spite of the small size, spunky speed even with the little motor, a perfect #2 vehicle for the family, rave reviews from the orient where these little cars have been in service already, very good safety readings, airbags all over. And for our bunch, the concept that the gas-suckin' truck doesn't need to be sold. These little cars could be the perfect communting mule for in-town errands and grocery shopping. Keep the truck for truck hobby and truck work things.

Instead, they show smashing piggy banks, and other stuff as mentioned earlier.

It's all well and good that I remember the commercial, but remembering the commercial does nothing to help the bottom line if I don't purchase the product. I will never buy a Yaris or whatever the heck it's called.

I saw the 2-door Yaris the other day, it looked like it would fit in the cab of my car (Pontiac 6000). I'm sure that these things may be nice vehicles, but they're too small for me. I'd be constantly worried about the other drivers on the road, especially the person on a cell phone in a large Suburban/Excursion. I think the dimensions of these cars are such that they would almost fit in the bed of a standard pickup. Doesn't exactly inspire confidence to me.
