Shocks, questions...

Hi guys, I'm leaning towards the Rancho RS5000s for my '99 Silverado, 5.3, 2WD, Extended Cab for the price and quality/performance.

Two questions: Are the RS5000s the ones to go with or would anyone like to steer me away from them.

And, can anyone give me a quick step-by-step for removing the old and installing the new shocks?

I have an 02 GMC ext cab and I have Rancho RS5000's on my truck. I think they are a great shocks. Right off hand I do not remember the size wrenches you will need but it did not take me very long to change out all four shocks.

I would suggest that you take a close look at KYB's MonoMax. KYB is an excellent shock and their MonoMax is a true Mono Tube shock meaning the high pressure gas is contained in a separate chamber from the oil. In a twin tube shock the Oil and Gas are in the same area meaning they will mix to some degree under rought conditions. KYB also uses seamless tubes and seamless mounting ends and they triple chrome plate the rods.

Does it sound like I work for KYB? I don't but I do work for an Auto Parts supplier who sells them. We added them in select locations to our offering along with Gabriel and they have done so well for us that we are not converting every store in the US and Canada (over 3,400 stores) to KYB.

Take a look at them and see if they may be what you are looking for.

When installing new shocks do you need to lubricate anything, ie: bushings?

I would also recommend the KYB's, both the MonoMax and the GR2's are good designed products. I would run as far and as fast as possible from anything made by Arvin/Gabriel. The Rancho 5000's are older technology but they are do work, but not my prefernce.

I used to work for both Arvin (who is the parent and OEM name for Gabriel) and KYB. I have seen the inside workings of most of the designs available on the market doing competeitor anaylis and benchmarking. Some designs are pretty neat and state of the art and some are 40 yearold carryovers that are cheap.

This is exactly why we are moving from Gabriel to KYB. The quality and technology that goes into KYB is unsurpassed.
