03 YukonXL A/C not working

My daughter has an 03 Yukon XL that the A/C quite working last summer.

$1400 replacement job. Ouch!!!

Now today my 03 XL's A/C quite working also.

Is there something inherently wrong with the A/C units or is there a recall of somekind?

I've read other similar posts regarding A/C issues and as a certified non mechanically inclined guy, I need some help.

I will disconnet the battery (kinda like rebooting a computer?) and check the fuses.

Other than that I have to go to a dealer or a knowledgable mechanic with some experience with this issue.

Anything else I can do or just head straight to the dealer?

Thanks

Fluid was full, belts looked OK, so I disconnected the battery as mentioned here, and walla, I now have air again.

Not sure if it's a temporary fix but at least it's working now.

This really seems odd.

BTW, there are TSBs about catastrophic failure of the compressors on these models (just had that happen in my 03 Yukon XL). This is probably the $1400 repair you refered to.

One easy thing you can do in the future is to check and see if the compressor clutch is turning. If it's not, then that's an easy explanation of why you don't have AC and it's likely an electrical problem, or proble with the clutch itself. If it is turning, and theres no cold air blowing, you're likely out of refrigerant.

If you hear a grinding noise when engaging the AC, then you likely have the bad compressor problem stated above.
