Dexron T-IV or VI? For 4L80/85e?

Recommended Posts

I read here about Dexron VI (6), but when I went to the GMC dealer, a mechanic said he just came from a class where it was taught that T-IV is the approved replacement fluid for 4L80e transmissions where Dexron III was formerly specified.

I've seen the T-IV bottle, GM part #88900925.

I've never seen a Dexron VI bottle, but I read about them on the forums.

Are people transposing the Roman numerals accidently?

Are there actually two new Dexron specifications?

If so, are both the IV and the VI approved to replace III?

Or am I just hopelessly confused?

Please help...

They are transposing the Roman numerals.

The T-IV tranny fluid (Part#88900925) is for the Aveo's automatic transmission.

(And at this time its used only in the Aveo's,Dexron III is not to be intermixed with the T-IV tranny fluid)

The Dexron VI tranny fluid (Part#88861003) is the replacement for Dexron III.

You can use Dexron VI in place of Dexron III,But you cannot use Dexron III in place of Dexron VI.

GM is currently in the process of depleting all of its stock of Dexron III.

No,Only the Dexron VI replaces Dexron III.

The IV tranny fluid is not to be intermixed with any Dexron fluid.

Unbelievable.

THIS is exactly why I walked OUT of my GMC's service/parts department and came HERE first.

Do you guys realize that the service writer walked back into the parts department and brought out a 12-pack case of T-IV, at $12.93 cents a bottle, (but as a special "favor" for me, he'd knock that down to just $9.70 per bottle, for a total of $112.00 + tax just for the fluid alone), and proceeded to sell this to me for my 2005 YukonXL with only 13,000 miles?.

A little voice inside my head said wait a minute, let me just verify this online first.

I superfically thanked the guy, and escaped with my money in hand.

Now I'm REALLY thanking YOU guys, for setting the record straight.

The people at dealerships cannot be trusted. The mechanic and I were discussing Dexron VI, and the service writer must have transposed that to mean IV.

Unfortunately, it's the service writer's that the customers like me are forced to deal with if we walk into a dealer.

I think I'll avoid the dealer from now on. I'm glad I didn't buy the GM extended warranty. I think I'll put that money toward my own Tech 2 scanner instead.

Can't trust anybody, no matter how many pins and badges they have on.

Thanks again guys, and thanks for the Dexron VI part number.

Do you suppose I can order a case through GMPartsDirect? Or where is the best (non dealer) source for this fluid?

Well don't be too hard on the dealer, because I work at one and I hope you trust me! :driving:

There are soooo many different types of fluids out there its hard for anyone to keep up with them,I had to do a little digging myself on the "T-IV" fluid to find out the information I found for you.

One other thing, the Dexron VI is also available in gallons,Its part# is 88861045.

A warranty is just a recipe for frustration.
