Not another exhaust question

Hey guys, Great site.

I was hoping you guys can help me out. I have a 02' 4.8L silverado, and was thinking of putting an exhaust system / muffler on it. I've pretty much narrowed it down to flowmaster....But, I didn't want anything loud. I was just thinking of replacing the stock muffler and keeping the stock pipes.

My question is will a cat-back system be louder than just changing the muffler? And, which series flowmaster would be best? (thinking about 70 series.)

Thanks-JD

Wlcome to the forum Rado Silver, and to answer your question the only thing that would make a cat back system louder than just changing mufflers would be if it had oversize exhaust tips or if it was a dual tailpipe system, they are sometimes a bit louder.  The flowmaster is a great choice but the 70 series is more meant for big block trucks and towing vehicles with dual exhaust, you would be better off with a 60 series, they are made for smaller engines but it depends on what kind of sound you want it would be good choice if you don't want a lot of noise.

You can go to www.flowmastermufflers.com and hear what each muffler sounds like.

Hey RadoSilver, Welcome  :)

A 70 Series Flowmaster is VERY quiet.  Are you looking for strictly performance gains or a slightly better sound?

I have a single Flowmaster 40 with dual tailpipes on my 5.3l. I have a sound clip on my webpage if you want to hear it. From your post, it may be too loud for you.  A 50 or a 60, like 'Off Road Red' recommended might be better for you.

Good Luck!

If your not in a big hurry I've already ordered the Flowmaster #53072 which is the drop in muffler for the new GM trucks. As soon as its installed I'll post a link for pics and sound. Should be no more than a week. The muffle shop where you get it installed will have to add a small length of exhaust tubing to match up to the factory pipes, no bending required.

Thanks for the info. I'll check out the website and call some muffler shops around here.

I guess I'm looking for a system that will improve performance with minimal sound.

I just checked out the flowmaster website and compared the 60 and 70 series. The 60 series seems to be for 4 and 6 cylinder engines, and import cars. Will the 60 series work?

According to the sound chart the 70 series is where I want to be (close to that mid mellow range).

BTW- What size diameter are the stock pipes?

I have a 2001 1500 with dual 50 series flowmaster w/ deltaflow and I could not be happier.  Not too loud inside the cab and just the right amount to get noticed while driving by.  The performance increase is a very good added bonus as well!
