Auto 4WD

Whenever the truck is put into 4wd i get the check 4wd light and wont go back into 2wd. After shutting off the truck and restarting then it will go back into 2wd and the light shuts off. What is causing it to do this?? It does not matter if I press auto 4wd or 4hi

Sounds to me like the 4x4 switch is bad. I had the same problem when I had my 99 1/2 ton Z71, everytime I went to put it in 4wd, it came up 'Check 4wd' and as it turned out, there was a service bulletin on it. You might want to check with the dealer, you might be able to get it replaced for free if there is a recall or service bulletin on it.

I checked with the dealer....none exist
