Gas brand and MPG ???

Just wondering if all gas is the same in regards to MPG ?

 

Anyone interested in doing a study of the brands vrs no name gas ?

 

I know many will say: its all the same , so go for the cheapest .

 

anyone to argue the point ?

I get the best gas mileage with Shell V-Power, around 17mpg average i get around 15 wit regular and it goes down from there with HEB Wal-Mart etc. but i do know that if you want to wake up the 5.3L a good bit, than run a couple tanks of premium through it and you will slowly start to fell the difference as the the PCM Starts to put some of the timing back that it took away becasue of low octane gas.

I don't know about MPG, but all gas is not the same; check out top tier gasolines and you will find that cheaper fuels are more corrosive and are dirtier than top tier fuels (chevron, shell phillips/conoco). You may be putting your fuel system at risk by using cheap gasoline. There are other threads on this site on this subject.

One of the differences is that some brands commonly use ethanol blend fuel. Most of the Cenex stations around here use an ethanol mix, but aren't always open in advertising this fact. Nothing wrong with using the fuel and supporing the farmers, but it's a proven/published fact that the fuel mileage will slightly suffer.

I've kinda played with this a little bit. I get the exact same gas mileage no matter what gas I use. Texaco v. Race Trac v. Shell. I've even tried running high octane gas and that rendered no difference in fuel economy. I get about 16.5 combined hwy/city. I'm a believer that the difference from one gas station to the next is pretty neglegable. I do however try to stay with nicer gas stations. They just built a really nice one around the corner from me and the gas has been 10 cents cheaper since its opening.

 

When I did this little study I wasn't really very careful. I think I'll do it again and be a little more careful wiht my driving.

While I get pretty good gas from Bush's Baked Beans, I find that I get the most bang for my buck from Pizza Hut's Pan pizza. Specifically, the "Meat Lovers" variety.

I can't comment on gas mileage, but a a few yars back, some magazine or similar did a gasoline study. there was like 4 major chans studied in various cities. the test was for fuel consistency, and claims on being the "cleanest gas" you can buy. If anyone remembers, this was back in the mid 90's when all of the hype about detergents and cleaning agents were in all the advertising.

 

as the test turned out, only one brand of gas actually passed, anywhere. the Phillips66/standard stations were the only ones who lived up to even the national gasoline standards, let alone their own claims. it was kinda surprising what was all put in the gas, that wasn't gas.

I drive approx 50K a year in a Dodge Caravan and check every tank. My driving takes me on basically the same roads for the most part. Some interstate and some rural two lane roads. I do my best to run Chevron because I truly believe in Techron which is also in Texaco fuels. I also have run other brands and the only change in fuel mileage that I have ever had was when I ran about 4 tanks of Conoco in a row. We have a large truck stop who sells Conoco and for some reason is usually 5 to 10 cents a gallon cheaper than anyone in the area. I tried it, and after the 3rd tank, I realized my mileage had fallen significantly. I dropped from an average of 24.7 to the upper 21 to low 22 range. I ran one more tank, and the mileage was still very low. I have never bought any more fuel from this place.

 

I have also just completed running 8 tanks in a row of 89 oct vs the 87 that I usually run. The results really confused me. Using averages of ten tanks at a time for 30 tanks, I got 24.27, 24.91 and 23.94 all on 87 octane. I ran 8 tanks of 89 octane and got an average of 22.82. I have stopped running 89 and will see if my mileage comes back up on 87.

 

One last thing. I began using 93 in my Wife's Yukon XL 5.3 because we use it towing a camper. I had read some comments from Snoman and others on this forum that said 93 would help the power and torque. I ran it for 2 tanks before towing and can say without a doubt that it helped this motor's power when pulling. It seemed to take give it more grunt around 2,000 RPMs and up which is where I running when pulling. I cannot tell about the MPG because I have not tested it yet when not towing.

Yes, I am interested in doing a study. I will try gas from 6 different companys. I figure a tank of each will run about $70. Can you send me the $420 this week?

I'm currently in the middle of a personal test. Up here in eastern Maine we don't have a lot of filling station choices (Mobil, Exxon, Irving and Citgo) are the major ones. I'm going to do 3 months on Mobil and then 3 months on Irving and see what the average is. I still have one more month of Mobil and then I'll move to Irving.

Gasoline is a commodity. The great majority of gasoline is shipped mixed together with that of other refiners. It only has to meet the specifications of the pipeline common carrier. When it reaches the terminal, additives are mixed in (usually in the trucks which deliver it to the stations) which are proprietary to the different oil companies. These are basically pretty similar though. I have noticed small differences in octane rating between brands rated the same. Again this is the additive package. Not the gas.

I did the gas vs gas check in two trucks:

 

1. Jeep Comanche 4.0I6

2. 2004 Ford F150

 

I went Shell vs BP and will always try to buy shell. In both those trucks, my gas milage dropped by about one mpg. This was done on a 60 mile round drip drive for a week. In the 2004 GMC, shell gets me around 18mpg going 72-75mph. This was measured on a 1200mile round trip. Not sure what BP, or others would have done.
